Personally, I didn't like the guy writing the article. He reminds me of Greg Doyel and that's not a good thing.

I've had coaches like you, and you're right, I hated them.

Cool Haha

Yeah, in a three-inning game with a one hour time limit where you bat 13 players, I'm gonna tell a little 10 year old to strike out on purpose in her only at-bat?

Give me a break. What if it was your kid? Would you want the coach telling her to get out on purpose or not try her best?

If you weren't taught to play your best, I feel for you.

If your coach didn't put you in the best positions to succeed and win, I feel for him or her.

I knew there would be some people that would take some potshots...and a few of you did not disappoint.

Comical.

its 10 and under, its called having class, or turning off the score.

what's not comical is how serious you took 10 and under softball. that's sad

I don't know why, but I can't stop laughing at this. He basically took a giant dump on the OP without even knowing he did.

+ a million. As a baseball coach myself (3B coach, rec and travel) I know coaches like you and you're right....they are hated. There is a time and place for everything. Running up the score in rec ball is not right at any level (with the possible exception of season ending tourneys where run differential, etc is an issue) THE #1 PRIORITY in REC ball is to teach the core skills and more importantly to help kids learn to love the game. To want to come back and play next year because there are so many other things kids that age could choose to do. Coaches like you that think you're bigger than the game itself are the reason kids don't come back. Don't you realize that at that age as many kids are there for socializing as for the actual sport? That's why it's called RECREATIONAL. Even in travel ball there is always room for sportsmanship. A handshake after you've purposely embarassed someone doesn't mean anything except that you're an even bigger ass.

I lost a ton of respect for you today Griff.

BTW...One of my (younger sons) out of park All-star all-star teams that I coached won the sportsmanship award at the last TWO Dizzy Dean World Series. Will Park Predators. We finished 12th out of 48 teams in '07 and 3rd of 48 in '08. It's possible to win and have class too.

Cool Running it up?

Running up the score? Give me a break. I taught my players to go hard -- you are turning me into a monster, and it is funny!
I told you there were no ridiculous margins...my way of getting out of those games, 10 years ago, was to bunt. That way my players still got to practice and element of the game, and the opposition merely had to field the bunt and throw it home (bases loaded) or to first.
I've got to hand it to y'all, you can really turn something around quick!
If I told you my team was the worst team in the league, you'd be ragging me for not teaching the kids how to win.
Sportsmanship was never an issue for my players.
