high school football question.

I was talking to a few folks at work about the high school up the street from me, making it to the state championship game.(they lost) The game went into OT, and it ended on an interception in the endzone. The guy that made the interception was also the qb of the other team, which made my friend ask me "why do kids play both offense and defense, when there are plenty of players". I'm going to say this is fairly common in high school football. Does it make the transition from high shcool to college easier, or it doesn't really have an impact. I was just curious what the nation had to say.

College ball is much faster and the players are bigger and stronger.

in High School, a coach cannot afford Not to have his best athletes on the field at all times. Offense, Defense, returning kicks....gotta get the ball into the playmaker's hands at any cost.

and No, there aren't always enough players, depending on the situation. High schools can't (legally) recruit.

High school teams have thin depth. Usually there is 4 or 5 stars or athletes. They'll be the main contributors on both sides.

My high school only played guys one way but we were the only team we played that played guys only one way. We had 60 players but with only varsity and no JV we only had about 25-30 guys that could actually make it on the field but we found that the advantage of having fresh guys over did having your stars on the field at all times if you had 4 stars we just put 2 on D and 2 on O. Seemed to work were playoff bound all 4 years of my high school and always won at least 8 games

It's the same at most high schools, save some of the "power programs" that make it into the USA Today top 25 at least occassionally.

For most high schools, the best two or three athletes on the team are typically on the field at all times. It's been that way in every HS around the area I know of.
