| nice win by the Russians, particularly their two goals in overtime. The Dutch looked slow, especially after the initial 90 minutes.

| This isn't nearly as big of a surprise as people will say it is. The Dutch are known for slipping up. Guus Hiddink is a fantastic coach. I'm not sure about how he has done with clubs, but with national teams, he is a winner. He lead the Dutch and South Koreans to the World Cup semifinals, and had a surprising amount of success with Australia in the last World Cup. I hope he stays at Russia to make a run in South Africa 2010.

| In my opinion, the most interesting game of the first round tomorrow. Spain vs Italy.

| Paul Mirengoff, of the mostly political powerline blog, is quite the soccer fan. Here's a really interesting entry that helps a neophyte like me understand soccer a little more. Power Line: The rule change that saved soccer

| Good article. Both very true points. Another thing that saved the game is the conditioning of great teams. Conditioning has come a long way since the 70's. |

| Stopping play for obvious non-serious injuries is absurd.
Hope Spain can plug one in before penalty kicks. |

| Good shootout... Spain is through. Italy didn't seem nearly as dejected as other teams who go down in this situation. The World Cup Medals may have something to do with that. I was pulling for Italy, but I think Spain wants this more.

| Turkey's miraculous run has finally come to an end. Germany takes the lead in the 89th minute and goes on to win 3-2.
