College football playoff

This season is making yet another great case for why college football needs a playoff.

Are there still people that are actually anti-playoff?

If the season ended now, then yes. It isn't even half over yet.

So you need to see how things play out before you finalize your opinion?

I'm fine with the BCS right now. I definitely see the potential for some major complications at the end of this season. However, maybe not. Suppose Nate Longshore comes back for Cal and they win the rest of their games, beating the crap out of USC in the process. LSU wins out, handily defeating UK in a revenge match for the SEC championship. Meanwhile, USF slips up and loses. Ohio State and Boston College both drop games. I think in that scenario an LSU-Cal matchup would be acceptable.

Well you have presented a scenario that I completely disagree with being acceptable. A LSU-Cal mathcup with the assumption that there are teams like OSU, OU, BC and USF with the same amount of losses. That is the reason I see a need for a playoff. I don't get why some teams get "voted" into this one game and more importantly why it is fair or accurate in any way.

You can build your schedule to go to A bowl or to go to THE bowl. Ohio State scheduled Akron, Kent State, and other weaklings. Boston College is no good and in a few weeks they won't be in the discussion, anyway. OU will likely drop another game. Anyway, when it's all said and done, I highly doubt there will be more than four teams that deserve a shot. In that case, a plus-one would erase all doubt. I don't recall any instance where a plus-one wouldn't settle things. That's the only alteration I'd consider.

Anyway, I hear the same talk every year about how this will be the year that the BCS totally, completely fails. But that is always said with like 3 weeks remaining, and things sort themselves out. There's still about 2 months of football to play. It's a bit early to start worrying.

Yea and in the past I have heard the anti-playoff people make statements about how a number 8 seed could never beat a number 1 seed. Well looks like that argument is losing ground at a blistering pace.

I'm not sure what THE answer is but I would like to see some playoff type format too. I agree with av123 about people being voted in. I mean LSU is ahead of UK, both have 1 loss, and UK just beat LSU. The wat the system is now I would rather UT play a bunch of easy non-conference games because playing tough ones only seem to hurt you. tOSU is #1, why? They have played no tough games, it's all reputation.

Well, this weekend a number 16 seat beat the number 1 Blistering pace, indeed.

Hogwash Swil. It is obvious that the 2 teams playing for a title should be voted on. I mean look at the preseason top 10 polls, these people know what they are doing.

I'm still anti-playoff. I say let the season shake out and then have a BCS +1 format, but that's as far as I want to see it go.

So GA, you are of the assumption that at most there would only be 4 teams worthy of a title shot in any year?

the most prevalent argument is that a playoff would lessen the current extremely high value of regular season games. I completely disagree with that notion in that a team only has 10 games, give or take, in which to separate itself from pretenders. I think we could have a high value regular season that would crescendo in an unsurpassable 3 or 4 week tourney.

Exactly BPV. This UT v. Bama game will always be big to the respective fans but for the most part is meaningless to everyone else. Teams ranked 10-25 in the 8th week of the season would basically be busting their arse to stay in the hunt for a playoff berth. Can you imagine eliminating Bama from the playoffs, ha, now that would be sweet.
