I totally agree with you. I have always loved watching the British Open. Other than the Masters, it is my favorite golf tournament to watch and the only golf i'll ever get up at 6am to tune into. I don't know what infactuates me about it but I just enjoy it.

Tiger hit 2 off the opening tee. Wonder if he showed up at the last minute like we typically do and asked his partner if they're hitting two off the first.

Tiger's flailing tee shots have jumped back in his bag today. He can turn a round on a dime, but he's not having a Tiger day on the links...

On the range they showed him hitting a mid to long iron and he was watching the balls for a very long time. That's typically a bad sign for those guys, cause when they're hitting it well, they simply hit and reload cause they know where it's landing and they need no feedback from the ball flight. Long stares on the range are often seeking feedback from the flight path. I actually made that comment to my neighbor and he nearly choked when the first tee shot went awry.

At his swing speeds, timing issues are deadly.

that new belly putter might be all he needs. He hits it as well as anyone and chips / pitches incredibly. If he becomes an even average putter, he will be a force for many years.

That said, he left a ton of putts short today.

There was a discussion about that on XM this morning. I didn't see it, but they said there was a marked difference in the pace of his putts and that he looked a lot less aggressive today.

I was shocked, because he made all of the 4-6 footers that I saw, so you'd assume that he had no real fear about the comebackers.

Give Carnoustie it's due today. The leaderboard is only begrudgingly yielding red numbers...

best defense the course has right now is SLOW greens. Wanna watch the stateside PGA tour guys struggle, just slow the greens to a crawl and our putting will leave town.

Is that a Ryder Cup ploy at Euro venues?

without a doubt. we speed ours up but that doesn't help because good putters can deal with faster, vice versa doesn't hold true. If I were Ryder Cup captain with our squads, I'd pick places with huge fairways, long forced carries, mile long par 4s and superfast greens. I'd water the course to sludge and make 'em play target golf. (I would also leave Leonard and Verplank at home for that track)

Sergio is sitting pretty right now. As long as the wind doesn't blow and course conditions stay fairly benign, I think he wins in a cakewalk.
