easy there everyone, just like about everything else in golf, club selection is all about different strokes for different folks. I hit my 4 iron quite often, as well as the 3. If I were to ever start carrying a hybrid 2 or another wood, believe it or not my 6 iron would wind up staying at home.

Best advice is figure out what club selection fits your game and play that. Just realize that 6 months down the road, you might be feeling a totally different club selection. But that's golf.

I always seem to wind up on courses with a 180-185 yd par 3 and would be lost without my 5 iron. I can swing easy and get my 5 down to around 165, or can go for broke and get my 7 up to 160 with very favorable control I might add.

But it's most likely from a mishap off the tee or something similar that would find myself needing to use the 5 iron anywhere else.

I took the 2 iron out of my bag last year and replaced it with Taylor Made 19 degree rescue. As much as I loved my 2 iron, the rescue club has been better for me. From the fairway, there isn't much of a difference, but from 225 yards in the rough it is perfect club and I can get it to stop on the green.

I agree completely. A swing is very individual. Some can bust a long iron - others can not. I was just thinking since RTE can't hit a 3 iron - don't keep trying to. Just drop it and pick up a 19-22 degree hybrid.

Or maybe I can learn to hit the ball better. mmmmm choices

I am playing Woodlake tomorrow. Anyone ever played there? Is it a tight course? Difficult?

I play mine from 245ish, but I can't get it to stop on the green from the rough. For that matter, I can't get much to stop from the rough beyond about 180.

That is a long way for 19 degrees. About Tiger length.

As far as irons go, I am the same way. Past 180, the only club I can get to stop is the rescue. For some reason, I hit it higher than I did the 2 iron...no doubt the lower center of gravity, plus I play blades. I have never really been a high ball hitter anyway.

Regardless, there is nothing quite like puring a 2 iron. I miss the feeling.

I used to love my Ping Zing 1 iron and used to think nothing of hitting that thing off the deck from the fairway on a Par 5. I bet I couldn't get that thing in the air now if I tried.

My 2 iron hybrid is an 18 deg with graphite shaft. I hit it much higher than my old 2 iron and about 10 yards longer. I play blades as well, so a miss with that hybrid is much prettier than with my butter knife.

It's not Tiger long. Dude can hit a 2 iron 260 uphill when he wants. In fact, Johnny Miller's comment upon witnessing it was "that's one of the shots that only Tiger Woods has."

I had the exact same club. Was hitting some old Mizuno MP-9s at the time and that 1 iron looked so much better than my little bitty 2 iron, that I favored it for almost any shot.

That said, the little hump on the toe was the ugliest thing I had seen up to that point.

Until I put two sand wedges in my bag, I carried a one iron. Loved it and like GA, would think nothing of hitting it into a green. Used it on short par 4s as well. Mine was a Haig Ultra. Before that, I used a Staff tour blade 1 iron, but broke it in my trunk.

Ping always has made easier-to-hit long irons. Always liked them just couldn't get away from the blades

could be why I like my 3 iron so much. I play the I3 Blade (no, not a true blade, but you should know what i'm talking about).

although before that I had a Lynx 3 iron that I hit very well.

It is still long. Even at 18 degrees. I was talking with a couple of college golf buddies recently and we were talking about how much further we used to hit our 3 woods (metal). I used to hit mine 245-260 easily. Now it is more like 230-250. And I didn't gain much yardage when I went to Titanium...actually, none at all. When I went from a persimmon driver to a Taylor Made driver in the mid-80s, I gained about 10-15 yards;however, when I changed to Titanium in the late nineties, I didn't gain any distance. And to this day, I don't hit it any further than I did in the late nineties. I have done the launch monitor stuff and all that, think I have the right shaft.....just don't bomb it. My iron play has gotten better...it had to with the lengthening of the golf courses and not gaining any distance with the new technology. Oh well

Let me know when you are coming over into Tennessee for a game and I will set us up some tee times either on Friday afternoon or early sat morn. With you coming over on 40, I will have to drive north to meet you. Heck, we can get on Holston or Fox Den if you like. We'll play somewhere that is in nice shape and challenging. As it gets closer, we can exchange emails or phone #s.
