Ummm, no offense, but you are crazy if you don't list Barry Sanders as one of the top 5 RBs of all time. Jim Brown is a fine candidate as well.

1. Sanders
2. Brown
3. Payton
4 and 5. About 30 good candidates.

Thurman Thomas, but no Jim Brown, Earl Campbell, Gale Sayers, Eric Dickerson, or Barry Sanders?

Any of the five should be above Thomas. In fact, that is a pretty strong list of 5 by itself.

Wow, how did I forget about those? You could compile a top 6 of Brown, Campbell, Sayers, Dickerson, Sanders, and Payton in any order and call it a day.

Jim Brown is #1 by such a large margin that the debate begins with who's number 2.

The only reason I don't have Brown at #2 is because of the era he played in. Had Sanders played on a decent team and played through his prime, he would have crushed the record books.

Yes, but Jim Brown may have made bigger records if he had actually played until he wasn't physically gifted anymore.

Barry Sanders also retired at a relatively young age.

So did Sayers, although injuries played a significant role.
