Crosby vs. Gretzky

I am no hockey buff, but if the general talent pool in the 80s and 90s is remotely close to the level of play today, then I've got Gretzky by a mile.

Wayne, but it might be closer than one would think. Betty White could've potted 20 during the 80's.

I'd take Mark Messier over Crosby. Crosby's really good, but we are not currently living through a great era of NHL talent.

There's a half dozen guys playing today who would've made runs at 200 points in that era. That's all I'm getting at.

To use your own words, it was still generally a simpleton's game then, slick players could put up ridiculous numbers. It was a sad era for defenses, partly because of the generally accepted scheming, and part because of an influx of great players.

Half a dozen guys? I don't believe that at all. Here is how my thinking goes: I'm old enough to have seen Gretzky when he first came in the league, and Lemieux when he came along a few years later, and Lemieux held on and played at a high level for a long time -- well into the modern clogged toilet era of the NHL. And Lemieux was still Lemieux even after the whole league decided they wanted to be the Devils. Therefore I think it's likely Gretzky would still have been Gretzky if he hadn't been a thousand years old by then too.

They played in an offensive era, sure, but there's a reason only two guys ever came close to 200 points. Messier played all the way through that era and his best was a paltry 129 points. Who are the six offensive players in the league now who are half again better than Messier?

Holy s hit. I can't belive this is even a discussion. Gretzky is the most dominant athlete in any professional sport, ever.

Gretzky had more assists alone than any other player had/has points combined.

Might as well add Lanny McDonald and Valeri Kamensky too.

4th all time in PPG, in an era that's been dominated by defensive hockey. People letting his public persona and nostalgia get in the way of sense.

Disagree. Crosby never had to deal with the two-line pass rule and goalies being able to play the pucks in the corner. Today's game is way more offensive friendly and definitely gives a superstar talent like Crosby more of an advantage to score.

Other than a small spike for 2 seasons following the lockout, goals per game have stuck within 1/8 of the lows of the dead era. After a short adjustment period, its a push, lets not pretend that it's 1985 out there.
