I would have to say Bill Russel could be a possible candidate. He seemed to do what his team needed when they needed it. He could score, rebound, shut down the other teams big man. |

| | Ocho-Stinko | Michael Jordan, he could distribute the ball and made all the teammates around him look great. Scottie Pippen was nothing before or after Jordan. He took them from a good team to an championship when he started getting the ball around. |

What did Jordan ever win without Pippen? |

| | Bleating Minion | I'll give MJ a little bit of a pass on the early years. No matter how good he was, he had to have SOME sort of supporting cast. Besides, you can make that argument against just about anybody since most good team players play on good teams.
Russell had Cousy/Hondo/Heinsohn/Jones. Magic had Kareem etc.... |

| | Rational Thought Allowed? | In baseball: George Brett
In football: Marshall Faulk comes to mind but I would have to go with Ronnie Lott or John Taylor in that category
In basketball: Bill Russell, however, most recently Dennis Rodman (except his last 3 years where he was in and out of the league)

Yogi Berra in baseball.
I agree with Ronnie Lott and Magic Johnson, but if you include Rodman you must mention Kurt Rambis and Bill Lambear(spelling). I think these 3 would fit more appropriately in, to quote Cheney(Temple), the greatest "goons" ever. |

| | Rational Thought Allowed? | Rambis, Lambear, Rodman, Barkley, etc. understood something very few pro basketball players understand today...THEY HAD 6 FOULS AND THEY WERE GOING TO GIVE AT LEAST 4 OUT EVERY GAME! Players didn't stroll down the lane back then like they do these days, because they knew that a HARD foul was waiting for them. This led to a more fundamentally sound basketball game, more passes, more beating defenses by moving off the ball, etc.

Baseball:Barry Larkin, Paul O'Neill, John Smoltz, Darren Daulton(pre-insanity), Derek Jeter, Joe Morgan, and Roger Clemens.
Football: Brett Favre, Marvin Harrison, Walter Payton, Matt Millen, Fred Biletnikoff, Ray Lewis, Mike Webster, and Darren Woodson.
Basketball: Charles Oakley, Tim Hardaway, Derek Harper, Mario Elie, Avery Johnson, Dan Roundfield, and both Terry Porters.
These lists are in no way exhaustive, they're just the first guys who came to mind. |

| | Rational Thought Allowed? | I like the Charles Oakley pick too...another guy who ferociously guarded the lane.
