Formula One racing

Know it is probably a long shot, but does anyone out there like F1 racing?

I'm a fan of just about any form of motorsports, but for some reason I've never been able to get into F1. Probably because it seems like it's usually a one man show, for years it was Schumaker and now Alonzo. Plus the time slot that Speed Channel shows the replays, usually early Sundays, is a time when I have a hard time following.

I've heard though that Katherine Legge has been testing for a possible ride in F1. If she goes that route I'll probably start following more closely.

Understand that. With Schumacher's dominance, I had really lost interest for a long time. This year, there has been some sort of parody with Raikkonen and Alonso. Next year they are going to V8's, which I honestly think sucks.

Legge tested in a Minardi. I don't know how serious the tests are, but it would be great to see a female driver in F1, even if it is just a test role at first.

I've just been a huge fan of open wheel racing since the late 80's and the days of Michael Andretti, Al Unser Jr., etc. But I really wish IRL and Champ Car would put aside their differences and merge back into one league. Don't think it will ever happen though.

What would be cool is if Danica Patrick got an F1 test.

I really liked Montoya when he was running CART, and especially when he showed up at Indy and dominated the show (was that 00 I think?). It would be cool to see him be more competitive every week and maybe contend for the championship.

It would be great to see a female in F1, and I think Katherine would be a great fit. The problem with that, of course, is Eccelstone. Is he really that much of a chauvinist or does he just have a habit of saying stupid things?

It would obviously be better for American open wheel racing if IRL and Champ Car could work out their differences and remerge. The only down side I see to that is that both sides would have to give up some of their current races, and I'm afraid that we'd lose our IRL race here in Nashville :cry:

Montoya and Raikkonen are my two favorite drivers, both driving for McLaren. Montoya won some races this year and showed great pace, he just had some bad luck with an injury at the start of the year and some mechanical/tire problems and backmarkers hitting him the latter part of the year. If the McLaren is as competitive next year as it was last year, I can see him competing for the championship.

Ecclestone is an old geezer that needs to retire. He is well into his 70's and he is very much a chauvinist. Good thing is, he has been bought out by another company. He is still going to run things, but he is no longer top dog. Another good thing is that he has no say in teams drivers, and there are some forward thinking teams out there who would love to have a female driver. Williams and Scuderia Toro Roso (formerly Minardi), for example.

Danica would be interesting to see in NASCAR, to see how she is received. It would be fun. I really would like to see her stay in IRL though, or go to CART. Those series need all the star power and headlines that they can get.

I will probably follow it a little more closely in the coming years to see how Montoya does, and also to hopefully follow Legge. Even though I tend to be obsessed with Danica, I'm a huge fan of all female drivers, and Katherine is one of the few who wins with regularity.

I agree that Danica probably needs to stay in open wheel. I think she should stay in IRL though instead of making the jump to Champ Car. She seems to have a much better feel for ovals than road courses, which is another reason that she may not be the best fit for F1.

I tried to get into F1, but after about 5 minutes, the incredible technology aspect wears off, and you're forced to change the channel.

Isn't Dan Wheldon going to F1 next year or in years to come, or is that just a rumor at this point?

Yeah, there are some races that are dog races. Some tracks have no passing opportunities at all. I have people at work who rib me about the passing in F1, but F1 is a different animal than NASCAR. Passing in F1 takes a lot more skill and is definitely a lot less common than in NASCAR. Not saying it is good or bad, but the two sports are just different.

You may have gotten hold of a bad race/track when you watched. However if you watched Raikkonen go from last place on the grid at the Japanese Grand Prix to pass the leader on the last lap of the race to win, you would definitely be a fan.

There have been rumors about Dan Wheldon and F1, but at the moment all driver seats look to be full. He could take on a weekend test role in a 3rd car with someone, but would he be willing to go from star to tester?
