I believe that he did. Would have died in the pen anyway. I don't know how he did it, though.

Popcorn was a chain smoking moonshiner, he shot himself because he knew he would not be able to smoke in the pen and in his eyes that was all he had left that he could enjoy. TIFWIW

Yes, this is correct. There is a Cannon County deputy that has has a video of the capture of Popcorn that will show it to pretty much anybody.
