Turn off the news

You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed
people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

Morgan Freeman's brilliant take on what happened yesterday with School Shooting

I agree 100%

You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem

I own weapons. Taking them from me only hurts society. Easily over 99% of gun owners are grieving this tragedy.

So basically something bad happened, the public cries out for safety, and now there are people who want the government to respond by taking rights away from far more good people than bad people.

It's been recycled and played like a broken record on here, but restricting firearms will do far less good than these people in the gun control wing would like to think. Just as everything else in the history of the world that has ever been banned, people with the wrong intentions will still find a way to get it, and as a result, the ability for people with good intentions to defend themselves will be severely restricted.

It's not a hard concept to get.

Take Freeman's advice. Maybe you and all the liberal hypocrites from New York to Hollyweird can hold a fundraiser. Why don't you guys have a telethon and every left-wing nutjob can raise money to built and maintain mental health facilities.

This is your Hands Across America moment. Shine on brother!

I didn't think Morgan was that insightful myself. Doesn't surprise me he didn't make the statement.

I don't own a gun. Can't fathom a reason to have one outweighing the risks.

How about you were a battered wife and the police won't do anything because it's out of their hands?

How about if you lived in a neighborhood where the break ins are on the rise and homeowners are getting beaten and raped?

How about if you lived in Knoxville and you wouldn't stop flying your Gator flag?

You as a lawyer should know that the police have no legal obligation to protect you. Same goes with the worthless piece of paper known as a restraining order. How many have been murdered by an ex? People always think they don't need a firearm until they actually need one. The best thing we can do is teach safe, responsible ownership.

I said that the risks outweigh. Not that there aren't benefits in those very unusual situations. Rather, the numbers prove, and easily, that far more people kill themselves or accidentally others close to them, than defend against an attack.

These shootings are quite rare compared to burglary and rapes.

Also, what are these numbers you speak of?
