Official Jon Gruden Thread 37

well it's all a matter of opinion at this point.

i'm just speaking in terms of what ifs....as we all are for the most part.

do i want Gruden? sure do. think it'd be awesome. definitely #1 on my list.

love to have Franklin. he'd be 2 Fuente would be a very close 3.

now, patterson and peterson, i just don't think either of those guys is leaving, no matter what, so i haven't discussed them at all. but again, doesn't mean i'd be angry if we trotted one of them out on the stage at a press conference.

i'm pretty conservative by nature, so i have my wish list, and will be excited to see it come true.

but i prepare for the reality that I THINK is most likely to happen. so i've spent some time looking at Frost and Mullen and finding paths for why they might succeed here. and i think both could be.

don't shoot me for it, i'm not going to rain on anyone's parade here. and i'm no trying to talk you or anyone else off the gruden train. would be great if it pulls in to the station tbh.

hope that makes sense.

Yeah I get what you're saying. To me, Mullen is our most realistic option at this point.

Nearly a homie... Warner Robins. Have you heard anything on the coach search there?

Nothing here. All you hear around here is UGA and how they control their own destiny. I will say, I have a friend in Maryland who contacted me and asked if I had heard that DJ Durkin(?) being thrown around for UT. That his name has been mentioned up there a few times. I told him I don't see that at all unless it was for a coordinator position and that isn't happening until we have a HC. So no, I haven't heard anything really.

$10M Gruden
$13M Staff

Someone please explain what it would take for the Athletic Dept. to get an acceptable ROI in 3 years on a $69 million coaching staff payout. (Can't make myself call it an investment.)

SEC Champs, Top Four, get to playoff, win the national title.

yada yada....Show me some numbers.

You do know we made $107 milli last year with Butch Jones right?

One thing he said is absolutely true. Jimmy Sexton is hella powerful. To get that entire crew talking that much about Mullen. Incredible.

i think it's funny that a guy that regularly uses the word "lads" also uses "hella".

renaissance man.

I used to live in Warner Robins

Yeah, I am an AF brat... my mom is still there, Dad passed away 3 years ago. They retired there after his 20 years and then he went into civil service for another 20. I went to the same HS Marquez Callaway came from... Love our football there.

Will be a somber day in the Gruden house. A founding member of one of, if not his favorite band, AC/DC passed away. RIP Malcolm Young (Angus’ brother).

Don’t expect much to happen this weekend

Yep. I keep thinking why is the FL AD not even considering him. Makes me wonder what he knows.

His wife despises G’Ville and also he is not liked there. Would make Butch look like a choir boy with his temper and antics . He is a huge you know what. I Have to Live here with the bull gators . Also Bob Stoops mentioned a page back lives right next to ol ball coach in crescent beach and is all done with coaching . His Dad passed on the field coaching HS at a very similar age. He was/is quite cognizant of that. Done

It's gameday! No matter who is coaching, who is the QB, who we are playing, I am stepping away from all of the negative today and my focus is on the men wearing the power T. GO VOLS!

Me to but that feeling will last until about half way thru the 2nd quarter and then are hopes will turn again to a new coach.

Enjoy... I'm not sure there is much more for me to find out at the moment. I'll let you know if I hear anything new, but at this point I believe we're just waiting for an announcement.

Buyout:
  • Buyout terms were agreed upon prior to the Tampa meeting.
  • Don't know the exact terms, but was told that it is "very open on both ends" allowing both sides an easy exit.
  • Gruden's agent initially wanted them to have a liquidated-damages clause of 0 and Tennessee wanted a mutual buyout. This was the eventual compromise.

Endorsements:
  • Since first contact a major source of contention has been Gruden's current and future endorsements.
  • Frankly I don't think my two sources know how this ended up turning out and they acted like it may still be an issue.
  • As best as I understand it, Gruden does not want Tennessee meddling in his endorsements, while Tennessee is adamant that he will need to drop endorsements.
  • I got the feeling money wasn't the issue, but it was more of an issue of principle with Gruden.

Additional contract info I picked up:
  • Gruden has an out-clause on his ESPN contract. No buyout.
  • Was told a contract length of 4 years by one person, other did not know.
  • 3 leased vehicles.
  • "Around 25" season tickets.
  • Bonus of 1m.
  • Not as heavily incentivized as rumors have said. Base salary is pretty close to total salary.
  • Around 9m with around 1.5m in bonuses.
  • I wasn't given exact numbers on the salary so I would take that number with a grain of salt.

Staff:
  • Most of the staff-related issues I referenced two days ago I found out centered around Tee Martin.
  • Gruden has placed a great deal of importance on Tee due to his recruiting prowess.
  • Gruden has made it clear that he does not want to be on the road recruiting every single free night, and he feels (whether right or wrong), that having Tee on staff will take a lot of that pressure off of him.
  • When Tee was contacted 2 weeks ago it appeared as if there would be little to no resistance on either side if Gruden was hired. Things became complicated late last week when Tee was contacted by Georgia Southern. Another source I talked to said he's also been contacted by UTEP, but I'm not as confident in that source.
  • Tee is currently in limbo and no one I talked to knows who a potential replacement would be.

Timing:
  • Gruden has no interest in coaching this year.
  • He will not coach vs. Vanderbilt regardless of when an announcement is made.
  • If we somehow win the next 2 games he would coach in the bowl.
  • Due to that he prefers an official announcement on 11/28, with controlled leaks beginning on 11/26.
  • As of 2 days ago the AD had pushed for an announcement on 11/21 with controlled leaks beginning on 11/20.
  • Not sure what they've agreed on to be honest.

Source Confidence that deal is done:
  • I was able to talk to 2 of my 3 sources face-to-face yesterday and they both say that the deal is done.
  • Last time I talked to my main source they seemed confident as well.
  • I have no reason to doubt them.

Bless you Pill and your house!

Pill, that’s the best post I’ve seen. Straight to the point. Appreciate it.

Your tune has changed.

Just pointing it out.

Meh, not really. I'm the same as I've ever been. What's changed is the thread has a little more meat to it.

I called this thread a an absurd cultist circle jerk because that's exactly what it was. Beaver gonna get Gruden hired as part of his Socialogy Ph.D, and if you call that dumb, you are anti Gruden.
