Official Jon Gruden Thread 34

I joined this site yesterday primarily to say one thing.

This is the greatest thread in the history of the internet. Not even a close second.

As a Tennessee native (UAB grad) I am genuinely excited for what may be happening on the Hill. Gruden has been, is and always will be a football coach at heart. You can hear it when he does commentary or doing the pre draft shows. There's just so much knowledge in that noggin of his that he HAS to coach again. The fact he may soon be developing the kind of players that we expect from UT is just fun to think about.

Gruden to the Hill boys.

Oh as an added bonus we have every intention of going to Gainesville this weekend hanging an L on the gators. #GoBlazers #GBO

Welcome to our nutty lil family !

That's him. He was 25 his freshman year lol. Played for a few years with the Blue Jays minor league system.

Chris Weinke was the starting QB the year UT beat FSU for the national title. He got hurt, then the backup got hurt, and then entered Marcus Outzen. You might remember Outzen throwing a beautiful TD pass to Goodrich.

Weinke started and won the national championship game the next year. And won the Heisman in his last.

Jon's a real film room nut, has been for many years.

Apparently, Chris Weinke has become a real film room nut, doing QC for Bama.

Maybe Chris has quietly become one of the best in the country in that role at the college level, and Jon is looking for the best...and has the personal experience and connections to know where it is.

So Chris might end up being the squad leader of a sweat shop full of Tennesee Volunteer QC analysts.

Just a guess.

Chris is as solid as they come.
Worked with Cam for a while and got his best year out of him '15. Cam has regressed since

Add that to his connections in recruiting and he'd be a nice addition to any staff.

John Currie is not flying to DC to interview a guy for a S&C position. Sorry. Sometimes we can't connect all the dots. And that's ok. No need to stretch it that far.

Lord, hopefully it's not to see Durkin.

Previous post. Had lunch with the BOT member. He still refused to use the name Gruden today, but for ease of reading I've added it in his statements.

  • They said the AD is cautiously optimistic about the deal getting done, but it is by no means done at this point.
  • MoU has been signed but the contract itself has not.
  • I asked and they said that Jon Gruden was not in Knoxville last night.
  • The issues with the deal getting done still lie primarily on Gruden's side. He said "They're (AD?) in a wait-and-see situation".
  • Gruden is still concerned about his staff, although it is less of a concern today than it was 2 days ago.
  • Money is not the issue with the staff.
  • He began contacting staff over 2 weeks ago to gauge interest, but over the past 48-72hrs he has been working on officially bringing a staff together.
  • Several members of the potential staff have already agreed in principle, but there are some contract issues with 2 potential staff members, as well as a third vacancy.
  • I asked and they backtracked on their previous statement that 2 current staff members are being retained. This time they said they didn't know.
  • They said a face-to-face meeting is happening today in Tampa to hopefully line out a non-staff issue and Currie is going to push to get the contract signed today.
  • They feel like getting the contract signed today is reliant on Gruden feeling comfortable with the staff situation at this point, as well as lining out this other unknown issue.
  • BOT has been told that even if this was to fall apart, the AD plans to have a hire by 11/20.
  • Backup plan is Patterson. Currie has remained in contact with him and had a long conversation with him this past weekend as well as a face-to-face last week.

If Gruden knows he will be either negotiating a broadcasting job contract or NFL contract, why would it not be in his interview to flame the fire and “never say never.” Likewise, why would it not be in Tennessee’s interest for it to appear Gruden may be interested?

Seems to me both sides gain desirability and urgency by having this story out. That is why no one has put and end to it. That may be why we get these reports about subtleties suggesting interest from both parties.

When has that EVER happened in a coaching search/negotiation?

Hey Lurker. That's not funny. You can't disappear for days then come and the post you reply to is a Jay Gruden comment?

:glare:

Haha, of course I’m kidding — Jay was a great player-coach (QB) for the Orlando Predators, tho!

I am a lurker (now) because my wife threatened me physically for being on the OJGT too much. ;)

Man, Gunner, that's sure not what I meant by 'kicked the can down the road'. Heh.

I only meant today was not the appropriate day, or Mike and Mike the appropriate venue, for Gruden to announce his future job.

There's a time and place for everything. And since ESPN2 by telephone at 7:00 am isn't the time and place for that, he deflected.

That's all I meant, man.

He coming. He almost definitely coming. Kelly can go to hell or Florida, whichever he thinks is a little less painful. :good!:

Ok bro, I will take your word for it. I just remember how we got burned by him in 2012. So to say that i'm skeptical and worried that he doesn't come and leaves us with ONLY terrible options again is a bit of an understatement. I just hope he comes this time.
