Medical Advice

I'm having a hard time overcoming a recent cold I caught. I'm drinking plenty of fluids (orange juice, grape juice, etc.), munching down cough drops, and trying a few other methods a friend of mine suggested. If any of you have some helpful recommendations, I'd surely appreciate it.

What are your symptoms? The current strain of flu going around is NOT what nearly everybody got a flu shot for. You are tired, nauseated, low fever, scratchy throat from what I understand are the symptoms.

I had decent luck with Nyquil before bed and Dayquil (Walgreens generic versions now that I think about it) during the day with a cold last week.

Get lots of rest. Hope you get better soon.

Nyquil = worst night of sleep ever. get up in the morning, take something better and go back to bed.

Sudafed with Nyquil, plenty of liquids and about 12 hours of sleep got me up and going last week. Take a Sudafed along with a cup and a half of Nyquil, drink Gatorade and OJ and take a good long nap.

Nyquil will help, but if you need to be up and moving in the morning, just use half a dose. Take Sudafed Daytime during the day and maybe Mucinex if you've got really bad congestion. All you can really do is alleviate symptoms. There's not really any miracle cure, you'll just have to let your body heal itself. You might try taking Zinc Picolinate to boost your immune system.

Stunna, I'll try to help. If you have typical "cold" symptoms, then rest, lots of fluids and nasal saline rinses are your friend. You can either buy saline or mix a half-teaspoon of salt with a cup of warm water and irrigate the fire out of our nostrils. Afrin, 2-3 squirts, each nostril, twice a day for 3-5 days might help your head congestion.

OTC cold remedies, plain and simple, do not do much. The most complete scientific studies I've seen show maybe a 6% reduction in symptoms -- nothing you'll notice. SO, I'd save the cash and go simple.

A side note: a recent study showed Buckwheat honey superior to placebo (and dextromethorphan, or "DM") in relieving cough in children, so it won't hurt to give it a try -- although, children below the age of 1 should avoid any type of honey due to risks of botulism. No dose was specified, but I'd try a couple of teaspoons in a warm drink before bedtime.

Also, if your symptoms persist beyond the typical 7 days, or if things worsen, consider seeing your doctor. Even typical viral infections can lead to sinusitis, which might need an antibiotic.

Hope this helps, and let me know if you need further advice.

KD
