Spatting??

I remember watching a game a few weekends ago and a player got his ankle rolled or something. The sideline reporter said they took his shoe off and were retaping his ankle, then she said something about spatting(i.e. the white tape on the outside of the shoe and up around the ankle) was illegal so they were going to use black tape to do it. Does anyone recall this? And anyone know why that would be banned? It's a safety thing(not to mention it looks good), why would taping your ankles outside your cleats be banned, or does the tape have to be the same color as the shoe? Maybe I was just hearing things but that didn't make any sense.

I believe that the tape must be the same color as the shoe.

I remember watching games when they wore orange shoes & when one came off everyone started yelling "Flag on the play." That's probably why they changed it.

as a former athletic trainer, i hated spatting. the only reason i can think of it being illegal for is the 'same color issue' or the fact that someone finally realized how difficult it is to remove when someone has a serious ankle/lower leg injury. our head trainer at troy forbid them. the only time i ever dealt with a player who was spatted, had a both bone lower leg fracture and we couldn't hardly get the thing off his cleats without destroying the shoe and putting him thru unnecessary pain. i will get off my soap box now. sorry. lol. obtw, i HATE the way they look and it makes one have less grip w/their cleats.

and by the way, taping the ankle or using a lace up ankle brace is safe enough. spatting is nothing more than 'a look at me' tape job, just like the little strips of tape on a receiver's knuckles.

Actually, when it's raining, the tape on the fingers have more grip (when turned sticky side out) when wet than the new "magni-grip" (that's what Nike calls it) gloves do.

This coming from a former WR in high school.

But spatting is useless.

that's a good point. my receivers at troy weren't smart enough to try that. lol. they just used the 1/2" stuff cause they liked how it looked. ha

I used to get spatted in HS and never had a problem with my cleats gripping. I did make sure that the spat wasn't over any of the cleats though so that might have been part of it. I thought it look good though, but then again mine was always black too to go with the cleats much like some of our players do now(i.e. Hefney). I never thought about what would happen if I had messed up my ankle/foot in a game. I can imagine that being alot of trouble. Thanks for the input OrangeU.

OrangeU, I agree I hate spatting also.. We had a kid last year get tackled and he was spatted up and somehow his foot came out of his shoe, it was one big mess. he couldnt get his foot back in the shoe because of the spat and we had to take him out of the game, cut the spat off and get his shoe back on.. Not to mention I dont wanna spend my time beofre the game spatting 15 kids..
