Neighbor threatening to sue

Long read.

Okay. So I have a neighbor which is threatening to sue my family because my dog "attacked" hers.

Let me break it down for you.

I have a German Shepherd & he is very scared of other people, he doesn't even let my dad pet him, pretty much just me & my mom so you can imagine how he would be around strangers, right? Though he does bark at people when I'm outside with him but not really when he's by himself.

There's no leash law here so we let him run around freely.
He has never bothered anyone in the neighborhood. Not people nor dog.

My crazy old lady neighbor has, I think five dogs. A Yorkie, a Pug, two **** Tzu's, & I think the other is some kind of Chihuahua. All lap dogs right?
The Yorkie is a devil dog. They keep it chained but one day last year it got away, came up on my porch & attacked a dog I had to put to sleep earlier this year...well my brother went to break it up & the Yorkie tore up my brothers hand pretty badly. we never said anything about it though.

A few weeks ago the lady claimed my dog went over into her garage & just straight up attacked the Yorkie which I don't believe for a second was unprovoked & there wasn't any physical damage.
Now just a few days ago my dog jumped on one of the **** Tzu's in MY yard. I ran out & broke them apart & the dog ran off. I didn't see any blood or anything at the time.

Well just today the lady came over & talked to my mom & showed her the vet bills saying we better pay them or she will take us to small claims court. My mom asked how many stitches there were & the lady said none. The bill was for psychological medicine, no physical damage at all, just a spot were the hair was shaved off. We refuse to pay that. If there were stitches & physical damage then we'd most likely pay that.

She's complaining about how we let our dog run around the neighborhood causing trouble, attacking other dogs & we just sit there & let it happen. We've asked around & our neighbors say he has never bothered them or their dogs. He plays with the dogs on the other side of us.
Well her dogs run around freely too, they come in our yard & crap in our driveway. "well they're so little" says the lady.

Let me tell you right now. No one can argue this.
If my German Shepherd wanted to kill the **** Tzu he would have in a second.

To top it off the lady said she has a .38 & if my dog comes in here yard she's gonna shoot him. My mom fought back & said "Well I have a .22 & if your dogs come in our yard I'll shoot them." We won't though...unless she kills my dog because like I said, her dogs come in my yard all the time.

I just want to get some opinions on this. Who's right? Who's wrong?

It's hard for me to put my dog on a leash since he's been free for so long & when I do put him on a leash he just sits there & won't budge. I live on the lake & he loves to swim everyday, kinda hard to swim with a leash on.

The lady's husband, I don't think really cares anything about this.

Sorry for the long post, I'm just curious what people think about the matter.

It seems hard to prove by her that your dog did any of this.

But if the woman does not want your dog in her yard then you need to find a way to make sure your dog doesn't go in her yard.

That goes ditto for her. We don't want her dogs in our yard either. We're thinking about getting the invisible fence. But we had another Shepherd at another house with the invisible fence & it didn't stop him, he ended up getting hit by a car.

We've tried chaining him. He literally stood in the same spot for 30 minutes until I came back out & brought him inside.
He's never been tied in his life. It scares him to death.

But I will work with him on the leash & try to get him use to it.

I really do not see any other practical option that is a quick fix.

It took a while for my coonhounds to get used to it, it is just something that will take time.

Hey, I was hoping they would move soon. Their house is for sale & it's lake front property......but no one wants to pay $350,000 grand. It's been for sale for nearly 2 years.

Does anyone think I should pay a vet bill that's for the doc looking at the dog & for psychological medicine? There was no major physical damage. & she didn't come over here when it happened & said she's taking the dog to the vet, she came over after she already took the dog.

I don't see any reason a dog should be taking "psychological" meds in the first place. As if the dog could tell the vet "I've been traumatized!"

She'd be hard pressed to prove anything. I sure wouldn't pay it.

Maybe Hat can give you some legal counsel.
