MD Anderson

Anybody know anyone who's been there? Opinions?

I don't know anyone personally who is being treated there but they are the premier cancer research institute in the country. They have the latest experimental drugs in clinical trials so if you are needing cutting edge therapy, that is the place to go.

Mom is considering checking them out. Her docs have exhausted all their options.

I know a guy that went out there. Said it was really impressive.

Houston period is where she should go. If anyone knows my father's situation, I doubt he would still be here were it not for the MD Anderson trained doctors in that city.

My father was actually treated at Herman memorial, but all of specialists either studied or worked at MD Anderson.

Godspeed.

Cousin was treated at the Houston hospital and is 8 years free and healthy. They determined most likely due to his exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. Top shelf treatment IMO from his experience.

Thank you. It's good knowing she'll be in good hands if they're able to make this happen.

I highly recommend you fly out of Nashville or wherever southwest serves. If md Anderson is out of the picture, Herman Memorial is great, ask if your physician trained at MD.

I hate Houston as a city and a place place to live. It's a modern day Sodom and Gomorrah, but my father got sent there for a reason.

volley, the only other facility in the US that is close to MD Anderson in Houston is Sloan Kettering, in New York.

I have friends and co-workers that have been to both, and received excellent treatment at both

Thanks. SK was the other one she considered.

My older sister Melissa was diagnosed with thymoma (cancer of the thymus gland) in July of 1999 and given a very dire prognosis at the time. She had surgery at MD Anderson that November and my family spent a week in Houston with her. It was a very impressive facility and the treatment she received was professional and very caring. Upon her diagnosis the outlook was very bleak. She was told she would likely never be able to have a child following her chemotherapy but in 2003 she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. The doctors at UT indicated she might only have six months to a year but through the extraordinary treatment she received and her will to live she made it until Wednesday May 26th, 2010...almost 11 years. It was a miserable time but MD Anderson was first rate without a doubt.

Volly, I am sorry to hear this. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Not only does one become physically sick with cancer, it plays with one mentally or that has been my experience. I wish your mother and your family the best.

Thanks Gramps. She's been fighting this for five years (Stage 1 ovarian cancer). Nine different types of chemo, had every side effect you could possibly imagine, and she is still the best example I've ever seen of being "gracefully strong". She's quite remarkable. She's at the point now where another chemo could bring about leukemia because her bone marrow is so depleted. So she's interested to see if there is any option that her oncologist here hasn't explored.

She's leaving for Houston in a couple of weeks. I'm thankful she decided to go. They may not be able to do anything else for her, but she'll know she explored every option.

Thanks again for all the input.
