I have Ankylosing spondylitis. Haven't been to the doctor in about 4 years. I called back in February to get an appointment with one and the soonest I could get in is next month. I'm really struggling with inflammation and pain here lately. Have any of you had luck with OTC meds? I take 2 Tylenol and 2 ibuprofen twice a day and it's not helping. I want something to provide some relief until my appointment. I am rarely able to sleep and driving is very painful for me. I'm in outside sales so I drive several hundred miles a day. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Have you ever used any of the rubs like bio-gel?

Sorry to hear about the arthritis. They told me I would eventually get it in my right knee after the surgery to repair my blown-out ACL that I suffered in my first day of practice my second year of college ball. I don't take anything, yet, but I'm starting to feel it coming on.

Yes. However my type of arthritis, which is very rare, effects my entire spine. My spine will eventually fuse on its own. All I can really do is control pain and inflammation and work on my posture so it will fuse in a "good" position. If there is such a thing. It does effect my knees some so I do use the gel there.

I have arthritis in my lower back after having back surgery in 2007. Ibuprofen helps, but really the only thing that helps is just laying down for awhile. Of course that doesn't help much at work.

Aleve helped me too, but it is bad for my Crohn's. Haha. I'm a mess

I wouldn't recommend taking Tylenol daily for an extended period of time. Research its long term effects.

Sam-e and hyaluronic acid help me a lot. It's not an instant fix, but its helped me stay off anti-inflammatories.

I had my second acl surgery on the same knee and the doc told me he cleaned it up. I was getting some pain up to that point but I knew when reason was coming. Surgeries were about 18yrs apart

Other than reviewing your activity to see if something is causing it to flare up, I got nothing. I know too much walking on concrete floors causes hurts my back. Good luck.

I've got autoimmune issues (likely psoriatic arthritis).

If what you're already taking isn't cutting it you might be out of luck. See if you can get a sooner appointment?

Wow. I don't envy you, bro. That recovery is painful - don't care what anyone says. It's downright painful.

Actually if it's straight acl the recovery nowadays is easy (but it hurt back in 94). That was actually my 3rd one. I'm just glad he bought me a little more time with the arthritis

Good to know. Back when I had mine, they said they had some new 'miracle' procedure where they removed the acl, altogether, and replaced it with Gore-Tex. They string it down through the knee and bolt it down on both ends. I asked the doc at the time, 'why can't I have my mechanic do it and save on the labor?' Didn't seem like a miracle to me and it turns out the procedure itself was a failure.

I'm not on pain pills or anti flams and have it bad in one leg and now recently, my hand and fingers. Out of nowhere really. I broke it and fingers many years ago and its headed in a bad direction.
Getting old sucks. I'm beginning to realize why some people give up. I hit the ball with my new sticks for 15 minutes yesterday and my knee looks like Roseanne Barrs. And I weigh 175. You get to the point of questioning if many activities are worth the recovery.
Now I'm wishing I didn't keep playing sports till @ age 37. Flag, basketball, baseball. I wish I would've stopped after college now because I'm paying for it.

I have normal osteo-arthritis, but my wife has ankylosing spondylitis same as you. She doesn't have much pain in her back yet, but does have problems with her joints. We've found some relief with juicing, especially juices that include lime, kiwi and ginger, among others that reduce inflammation. This website allows you to choose recipes according to the health problem you want to fight: Juicing for Health | Juice Recipes

For me, I've found some relief using Tramadol but I can only take it at night since it makes me drowsy.

Good luck!
