What did it symbolize before these individuals ruined it?

States' Rights? The state's right to decide, over the objection of the federal government, that the state could utterly and absolutely attempt to deny the natural right to liberty of any individual based solely on the color of their skin?

Klan members. Not kidding, currently some of the larger klan groups are in places like Dillsburg, Pa and throughout coal country in central Pa. Nearly every time I see someone sporting the CF, they are members.

Of course there is also the crazy dude in Harrisburg who flies it upside down over the US flag (also upside down) as his personal protest against Obama.
