Is Facebook just a fad?

I don't use it so I'm probably a little bias but I could see it fading away in 4 to 5 years. I already notice that men are not using as much anymore. Going forward I dont think kids that are currently in their preteens won't want to use something that their parents use. Eventually something else will come along and replace Facebook, that unless Zuck just buys it.

I've had an account since 2005, and I haven't seen the slightest hint of its popularity declining.

A fad is short lived. May not last forever but is more than a fad

The word "fad" probably isn't the best use for something that has been building steam for over 7 years now. Social media is here to stay but I do think once younger kids start coming up they will find the next big thing. Also I think the commercialized it becomes the more people will stop being active users. But again, if Zuck continues his spending spree then he may just buy anything that gets in his way.

In college it was huge to me. Since I'm not in college anymore and not too worried about my social circle I'm not on it as much. That's probably where most of this is coming from. Most people just kind of outgrow it, but to a new generation of college/high schoolers it's probably as popular and time consuming to them as it was to me. I recently got engaged and my facebook was blown up for 2 straight days about it. Made my fiancé really happy. We were talking about how in the world people got so much attention about their engagement before Facebook. Stuff like that is what I think will keep it around.

This.

If Facebook is going away, it's because a superior substitute comes along. People love to communicate, and this gives them one more way.

Watched a CNN special on Facebook last night and I didnt know Google offered Zuckerburg 15 billion for FB, yes, B as in Billion. He declined. Unreal.

I doubt Google would offer than kind of bank for a so called "fad."

Facebook will be around until they, if they ever do start charging for using it...until then it will always be a popular tool and THE leader in social media. I have a Twitter account but I'm not a big fan of it.

No fad, its the modern day yellow/white pages. Their main issue is moble use. They dont make any money off of moble users because they cant fit ads onto the moble site vs desktop

Twitter is awesome because you make it what you want it to be. If you think it sucks, its because you made it suck. If you think its awesome, its because you made it awesome by following people who tweet stuff you find interesting (sports, celebs, politics, finance, etc)

Twitter is literally the 1st thing I check every morning for news and FB is something I check in my free time

Twitter is great for all kinds of information. It's part of the future of news.

If some Google+ and Facebook features could come together...that would be awesome. Surprised Google+ hasn't caught on.

Why the hell would they charge for it? If you charge for it, you lose a huge chunk of customers. The draw of facebook, at this point, is that 90% of your friends are on it. If only 30% of your friends are on it, then there's really no need to pay for it.

The advertising revenue they make is probably so ridiculous, there will never be a need to charge for it. That would decrease their revenue.
