Saw a guy smash his finger with a hammer and then relieved the pressure. It was amazing how far the blood flew. Never thought it would fly that far.

Poking a hole in your own nail is harder than it seems.

Had a roller skating accident a few years ago when this little girl cut me off at my kids birthday party. I bad to jump up the step, then I tried the "hit and spin" technique trying to extend my arms to the upcoming bench, and spin into the seat smoothly. When I hit the bench, I hit it high and it violently smashed the wall and broke the bench, and smashed my fingers. Had to poke holes in 3 of them and it wasn't fun.

It's not that bad. Plus, you can re-use the hole in the nail to relieve more pressure later if necessary.

I smashed the holy hell out of my finger changing a fuel pump in a Bronco once. The throbbing was so bad I had to do something, so I used the needle and lighter trick. You're not really drilling through the nail, because the needle is so hot (the end needs to be glowing) that it actually melts through the nail.

I actually lost that nail, but pain relief was my primary goal anyways.

There is some swelling and blood under the nail. Finger appears to be bloody underneath the skin.

It doesn't hurt - is generally numb but does hurt if I bump it on anything or put any pressure on it.

Web advice is to burn a small hole in the nail to relieve the pressure but says to do this only if it really hurts.

What say the Volnation?

You can pierce the nail but leaving it alone will end in the same result. The blood will dry under the nail. In a month or two the nail will start to crumble & the new nail will push it out of the way. It will probably take 6 months or a little longer for it to look normal again. Even after the old nail is completely gone it will look funky for awhile.

I would only poke through the nail if the pain/pressure keeps you from functioning. I slammed mine in a car door a few years ago and it was so bad I couldn't sleep. Start a small hole with a straight pin and work it SLOWLY until you get it through the nail. I would do it outside if possible because its going to make a mess.
