the dealer has about 200% mark up in the extended warranty, tell them you will give them about 1/3 of what they are asking or just wait for the offers to come in the mail in a few months that are the same lower cost

I'll use the movie Tommy Boy to sum up my feelings on warranties and guarantees.

Ted Nelson, Customer: Go on, I'm listening.
Tommy: Here's the way I see it, Ted. Guy puts a fancy guarantee on a box 'cause he wants you to feel all warm and toasty inside.
Ted Nelson, Customer: Yeah, makes a man feel good.
Tommy: 'Course it does. Why shouldn't it? Ya figure you put that little box under your pillow at night, the Guarantee Fairy might come by and leave a quarter, am I right, Ted?
[chuckles until he sees that Ted is not laughing]
Ted Nelson, Customer: [impatiently] What's your point?
Tommy: The point is, how do you know the fairy isn't a crazy glue sniffer? "Building model airplanes" says the little fairy; well, we're not buying it. He sneaks into your house once, that's all it takes. The next thing you know, there's money missing off the dresser, and your daughter's knocked up. I seen it a hundred times.
Ted Nelson, Customer: But why do they put a guarantee on the box?
Tommy: Because they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of ****. That's all it is, isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer's sake, for your daughter's sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me.

extended warranties on cars aren't worth the paper they're written on

The thing with extended warranties is most of the time you get what you pay for. If you don't pay a lot you are probably not getting a good warranty. My suggestion to you is read the full contract including the fine print. You will be surprised. Like someone said before too most dealers have a decent mark up in them. Make them an offer on it. If they won't budge and you found a warranty you like, get the name of the company and call them yourself. Sometimes they will sell to an individual.

Not sure of your location but EFG is one of the best companies to work with. I have work in service departments for ten years and they are easy to work with for the customer and for the dealer.

Good luck

I wouldn't pay for extra extended warranty beyond what already comes with it.

Having said that, the basic warranties do vary significantly, and I would consider those differences when I was first shopping around.

.

Put some money in a rainy day fund and find a good mechanic that doesn't charge more than $80-ish per book hour for work (could be different regionally).

I bought my first new car a little over a year ago, I bought the basest of models and told them thanks but no thanks to everything except some window visors and a cargo cover, both of which I installed myself.

Someone makes money and someone loses money on warranties/insurance. Obviously, the companies that make it their business to sell these coverages are making money. If you've got the $ to overcome potential problems, minimize your coverage and do what milo said about finding a good mechanic.

I got 3% but a solid deal on the principal and I don't have a whole lot of credit history.
