Police charge liquor store employee who shot at shoplifting suspect

Quote:
KNOXVILLE — Police charged a 76-year-old liquor store employee after he shot at a fleeing shoplifter during rush hour Monday in North Knoxville.

Harold Edward Williams of Mynatt Road faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment, according to Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk.

Williams was released from the Knox County Sheriff's Detention Facility after posting a $2,500 bond.

Williams was chasing a man from the Adobe Package Store, 5036 N. Broadway, about 5:39 p.m. when he fired a single round at the fleeing vehicle containing the shoplifter.

The round traveled across Rennoc Road and struck a beauty salon at 2815 Rennoc Road, DeBusk said. The projectile traveled through the front window of Styles Etc and lodged in a mirror at a styling chair, according to records.

Williams does not have a carry permit for the unidentified firearm.

The shoplifter has not been located.

More details as they develop online and in Wednesday's News Sentinel.
What do you all think of this!?

In my opinion, the police did the right thing here.

I would like to hear y'alls take on this.

Been well; I am running out the door now, though, to go to the Red Sox game (if it is not rained out).

He didn't have a permit. It's the correct action. Even if he did, the crook was fleeing

Didn't read it, but if the firearm was unregistered, it was a no-brainer. Then the suspect was fleeing on top of that. Open and shut case. Book him, nerd.

The police did the right thing. The guy is lucky that he didn't shoot an innocent bystander. That time of day is heavy with traffic in that area.

ugh! the one and only time I've ever been to Fenway, I waited for 2 and a half hours or so before I got tired of waiting and left, thinking they would surely call it. by the time I got back to my hotel in Norwood, they had started the game. sonsa*****es!!!

I rather hate to hear about some 76yr old guy getting himself jacked up in this way but the truth is there's nothing I see anywhere in that story where his actions aren't outside the law. I'm just glad nobody got hurt or it could have gone much, much worse for him.

You cannot use deadly force to protect property in TN. (whether the guy is fleeing or not)

My question is did the guy carry the gun or just pick up the gun and shot? He would not need a carry permit unless he carried the gun somewhere.

No carry permit. No life threatened (at the point where the shoplifter is just fleeing). No reason to shoot.

Right call.

How do you know it was the right call if the shoplifter got away? The shoplifter might have had a gun and told the clerk he would use it.

Because you can never shoot a fleeing person. The law makes that pretty clear. If they are fleeing, typically your life is not in danger.
