| This shouldn't be a surprise. The University is partnered with ORNL. |

Saw some crazy research.
Visited researchers in Y-12 and K-25
My favorite part was driving in every day past the old entry gates with the machine gun slots.
For a while I worked in a building where I had to scan my hands and feet coming in and going out for radiation. Since I was a sub contractor, I never got the radiation detection badge.
Massive bureaucracy - dual management structure between Martin Marietta (pre-Battelle) and DoE.
A robot delivered the mail.
The desks and pens were all that standard U.S. Govt. stuff.
Crazy union rules. If you ordered a computer - one group delivered it, a separate group took it out of the box and put it on the desk where you wanted it and a third connected the keyboard, mouse and plugged it in. Took about a week after it was delivered before you could use it. If you did any of the steps or rearranged the furniture there would be a union grievance filed.

At Y12, I started a training class at 7:58AM (according to the grievance filed against me)...union boys started at 8AM. Seems like I was grieved against once a month, and after awhile it was a joke with those guys...looking for ways to trap me. |

| I came to Oak Ridge after Martin-Marietta had the contract there and the plants were split up...so it was a fairly different situation. I only interacted with folks at the Lab on a few projects during my time at Y-12. I do recall plenty of interesting union stories. Actually, I was shocked when I started my job here after grad school and learned that I was actually allowed to change the light bulb in my lab. |

| | doo doo doo | One summer, several of the unions went on strike including the one that covered janitorial and the one the including furniture moving (they were protesting cross-training where they would be qualified to do more than one job).
Everyone in our building rearranged their offices; people were moving from one office to another. It was a free for all on moving stuff. They also paid the admin staff extra to do the janitorial work and the place was cleaner than ever

We're down to just two groups to get your system going. Progress!
