Yep, up there with Key West.

Eat your heart out world.

I have lived here my entire life and have never understood why people flock to G'Burg or Pigeon Forge. One would think there is Gold in them thar hills or perhaps they're trying to find corn licker.

Tourism, baby, tourism. Aside from the natural beauty of the Smokey Mountains, it's a place to step out of reality for the weekend. Shopping, eating, stuff for the kids, etc.

If you get a cabin out in the mountains it is really pretty. Parkway is as touristy as it gets but has things to do for an afternoon. That said its a nice weekend getaway for those of us that live relatively near by. If I lived more 2-3 hours away it's not really worth the trip.

Most know I grew up there and some know of my family's involvement in Gatlinburg. When I was younger, I used to peer down my nose at those who flocked there, and considered the vast majority of the "tourons' to be dumb hicks. That may or may not be the case, but Gatlinburg does have a lot to offer, and is completely different than anywhere else I've ever been.

Speaking of the mountains, did y'all know that some geologists have theorized that the mountains in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina are among the oldest on Earth? Did you also know that some of the same geologists say that the Smokies were once the highest mountains, peaking at over 30,000 feet before time eroded them? The forests and climate at the summits of the highest mountains are actually closer to the Canadian boreal forests than any other forests in the Southeast. There are more species of flora and fauna in the Smokies than anywhere else in America with the exception of the rain forests of Washington state.

Odd. Never thought of Gatlinburg being pretty. The hills around the area are pretty at times.

I really like old Gatlinburg. It's the quiet part of town and is always overlooked - which is a good thing. The rest is terrible and I avoid it.
