| I'm assuming it is not gay/lesbian friendly? Is that the controversy? Honestly, at first I thought you meant people were offended because they thought the man was molesting the boy when the wife wasn't looking.
Or maybe the part that is offensive is that nobody from that school is going to graduate. I mean, it does show the dude with a cap & gown. |

| I'm at a loss for words.
"…the depiction of a young man’s development from boyhood through adulthood as displayed may not represent the life experiences of many of the students at Pilgrim High School.”
Maybe she should show the man as an alcoholic or drug addict? Or maybe show him sleeping with multiple partners? Or keep the married part and add a divorce scene at the end. |

| Interesting perspective... Quote: |
In this article, there is a psychology involved with developing young minds. The assistant principal was worried how the mural would affect kids that don’t have the traditional family. There are many kids from broken homes that have only a mother or a father taking care of them. A kid already knows he/she is different if coming from this kind of situation and the mural may bring up hurt feelings further depressing the child. This is probably where the assistant principal was coming from.

| I'll agree that growing up and being raised by Mom and Dad is the ideal, but I have many friends who are pretty screwed up despite being raised in a two-parent household.

With the logic stated in passage I guess teachers shouldn't wear wedding rings because it is a symbol of blah, blah, blah.
We can't scrub the world of images that may potentially hypothetically offend or bother someone.
In another story I saw the student who painted the mural apologized if she offended anyone. I find the fact that she felt the need to apologize offensive

| | doo doo doo | Here's another example: Banned words from standardized tests - Chicago Tribune Quote: Warning: This column contains language some readers may find unsuitable for children. Parental guidance is suggested.
No, seriously, you have been warned. This is your last chance. Turn back now.
Still here? OK, fine. Don't say you weren't told. Here's one of the offensive words:
"Dinosaur."
And another:
"Birthday."
And another:
"Pepperoni."
And yes, yet another:
"Dancing."
Let's stop there before you have to fan away the vapors and break out the smelling salts. Or maybe you don't find those words offensive. Maybe you use such language around kids all the time. Well, that tells us something about you.
| Quote:
Or as a spokeswoman for the education department told the New York Post, which broke the story last week, banning those words "allows our students to complete practice exams without distraction."
So how are those words a "distraction?" Well, let's look at the list.
"Dinosaur?" Not everyone accepts the theory of evolution.
"Birthday?" Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate them.
"Pepperoni?" Junk food. That stuff'll kill ya.
"Dancing?" Didn't you see "Footloose"?
The full list is said to contain 50 objectionable words and topics, which also includes "Halloween" (too pagan), "divorce" (upsetting to the child whose parents have split), "disease" (upsetting to the child whose Nana has taken ill), "home computers" (not everyone can afford such luxuries), "terrorism" (scary), "slavery" (bad) and space aliens (sorry, Superman). In its defense, New York issued a statement saying that other school systems also have banned words lists. It says Florida bans the word "hurricane" and California bans the word "weed" (insert stoner joke here).

I thought the "family" perspective was interesting because it seemed most thought the issue was because a family was being portrayed as a man AND woman (offending the G/L community), when the real issue appears to be single parent families. |
