Wish they'd figure out something definitive. The number of kids on the autism spectrum is staggering.

Good news: if you set out to simultaneously combat autism and personal weight issues and only end up beating obesity, it means you killed 1 bird with 1 stone, which is still f-ing amazing.

Very true. The worst thing that can happen is people being in better shape.

I only know 2 people with autistic children. Neither mother was fat, let alone obese.

It's really getting hard to accurately measure any statistic as it relates to obesity because there is just so much obesity.

I'm not buying the autism connection. Vaccines is an interesting debate though.

Since there are two parents here, do you think more children are autistic, or is there just more education about how to diagnose it?

All this is saying is obesity probably increases your likelihood of having autistic children. It's not saying skinny people don't have autistic children.

Really? Because I thought that one was laid to rest for everybody but Jenny McCarthy.

Many researchers believe that the increase in autism is largely the result of physicians applying broader diagnostic criteria for the condition in recent years. On the other hand, some researchers believe that the incidence of autism spectrum disorders has dramatically increased. In any case, the best medical advice is that whatever the cause of autism turns out to be, parents should not let their fears prevent them from immunizing their children against the very real threats posed by infectious diseases.

Yes

Once you see the behaviors and do a little research, it's stunning the things you notice.

If you know a lot of families, you know more than 2. Many quiet or different kids would be in the spectrum today, and many other families don't seek help or advice because they don't want to know or are in denial that their child has an issue.

I knew several kids growing up that would be in the spectrum today. Some of their parents would have too. And a few brothers or sisters of friends. Of course, there are more people today, more press, more cases, etc., but imo, there have always been kids that had various forms of autism, but there was no label.

And after coaching kids for many years, including my own, I see kids on the court, ballpark, field etc that fit the profiles of the spectrum, which is broad.

My step cousin is autistic and his mom suffered from an eating disorder, still pretty thin, so I would have to disagree.
