Anti-Dog Bark

Hey all, I have a problem and would like some solutions. I work in nuclear and have been on 12 hour shifts 7 days a week (7pm-7am) for the past 2 months straight. I also work night shift when not on 12 hour shifts. I work in a very high stress no fail position and am so to say beyond stressed at this point.

My problem is that 5 college dudes moved into the house next door and I have been trying to put up with 2 barking dogs for months while I am trying to get precious sleep. I am not aware if they even know their dogs are barking all the time. I think they just leave them outside while they are gone during the day. I am too tired to even get out of bed to investigate and if I do get out of bed I won't be able to get any useful rest anyhow. So I just mutter profanity and try to do the pillow of the head move to try and muffle the barking. But that never works. Heck, I don't even see the neighbors at all with the hours I am working.

I know I could try and talk to them face to face if I ever saw them, but I think my tone and attitude at this moment may not be very nice and would offend or fall on deaf ears. The last thing I need is to open a can of worms to have 5 douchebags make intentional noise to continue to push my buttons. I also could write a letter. But, who knows if they will take that seriously.

I could also try some sort of cheap looking, over priced, electronic device that might or might not even work. My questions with these are do they work? Do they pick up just barking or do they also pick up road noise. I don't want to hurt the dogs, but I also live on a very busy road with a lot of traffic noise. So I would not want the device constantly emitting anti bark noise if the dog is not barking, if that makes sense. Ultimately, I am looking for a quick and easy solution to get precious silence. I don't have time to hold hands or try to convince someone that if they don't shut their dog up I might go postal. I want to be the good neighbor.

Any of you have any helpful suggestions, before I lose it?

I'd say go over and politely talk to them about it first. I had this situation happen to me, except it was my dogs...I kennel them during the day while my wife and I are at work, and I had absolutely no idea that they were barking during the day. I was in Alaska at the time, and we had to leave our windows open in the summer (because of no A/C), so it was driving the neighbors crazy. Your neighbors may very well have no idea its going on.

Well you have the right to call the police if you really wanted to. If I were you, I would talk to them, explain that their dogs are constantly barking, and ask them to do something about it. If they are complete douches about it, I say call the cops the next time you are disturbed by the barking.

No need to spend more than $1 on something to block the noise. Just get foam earplugs. They're incredibly inexpensive, effective, and comfortable. My mom has been wearing them to bed for years because my dad sounds like a moose in heat when he snores.

A pair of foam earplugs along with a running box fan.

Yeah, I was just teasing there with the big boy gun. Chris is exactly right. The foam ear plugs work great. Follow the directions. You roll them into compression, put them in your ears, they expamd out, and you can't hear boo.

Might not hurt to leave them a little hand written note on the door explaining that you sleep in the daytime. Keep it brief and to the point and polite. Not the "I'm going to come over here and kick your azzes" type note. Sometimes that works for awhile...sometimes not.

I also sleep with a large fan on. That combined with the foamies might do the trick for you...

Or antifreeze.

Like the others said, try being nice and talking to them first. Getting the local law enforcement involved would be the next step after that. I'm glad my neighbors dogs don't bark my wife works the 7p-7a shift too at the hospital, she'd neve sleed if they did.

Someone in my neighborhood got arrested because he poured scalding hot water on some begals next door to him because they wouldn't be quiet. Alabama fan too. Don't know his name so we call him Updyke. Pretty messed up story. In other words , don't do anything crazy. It's not worth it and not to mention mean as hell to do to an animal.

My suggestion is buy a noise machine. I use to work nights and sleep during the day. I could never sleep because of people cutting grass and cars going by. Dogs too , but nothing that bad. Anyway it makes sounds like wind blowing ( really sounds like low static on the tv just not as annoying). I got use to it pretty quick and can't sleep without it now. I know telling them won't do much good and may lead to an argument or worse. If it gets really bad , call the police and ask them what your options are. If you have none , you could always walk over and open the gate and let them out lol. JK

not foam earplugs, wax plugs. MUCH better.

Another idea is download a frequency generator on you iPod (if you have one) and run it thru your stereo. Crank up the frequency to 20k megahertz and crank the volume. You'll never hear it but they will.

I'd call the cops first, because if you talk to your neighbors and nothing is done about it then the cops are called, they will know you are the one that called them. That might cause problems for you down the road.
