To add to what TennTradition was saying, people often only think about hurricanes and hurricane seasons as being "bad" when they 1) hit land 2) hit land in the Caribbean/Atlantic/Gulf of Mexico and 3) hit the US.

We're understandably biased towards what affects us.

Also, the impact El Nino has on hurricane season is hard to over-state. Ocean circulation patterns and thus temperatures are EVERYTHING for these storm systems.

It's a safe bet we are going to see a few more significant hurricanes this year than last year.

Is it wrong i get excited when i hear a hurricane might be coming my way? Of course im not wanting death and destruction but its such a fascinating weather event to live through from the first wave of counter clockwise clouds that race over your head. If you can keep it at a Cat 1 and you aren't in a mobile home it's alot of fun.

Nothing wrong with it at all. If there is, then in the words of Luther Ingram - I don't wanna be right. I love hurricane season. One of the perks of living in FL is the weather we get. Obviously, nothing massive and destructive - but I enjoy strong storms.

With that said, here is some good footage of the approach of Hurricane Alex.
YouTube - Storm in the Gulf: Hurricane Alex aims at Texas, Mexico

I wonder how many twisters this storm is spinning off?

Alex is now a category 2 hurricane. According to Jim Cantore, this storm is the strongest June hurricane since Hurricane Alma in 1966. If true, that's impressive.

(5 made landfall as hurricane in U.S.)

2005: 15 Hurricanes, 7 major hurricanes, 3 hurricanes through June, July.
(5 made landfall as hurricane in U.S.)

2006: 5 Hurricanes, 2 major hurricanes, 0 hurricanes through June, July.
(0 made landfall as hurricane in U.S.)

2007: 6 Hurricanes, 2 major hurricanes, 0 hurricanes through June, July.
(1 made landfall as hurricane in U.S.)

2008: 8 Hurricanes, 5 major hurricanes, 2 hurricanes through June, July.
(2 made landfall as hurricane in U.S.)

2009: 3 Hurricanes, 2 major hurricanes, 0 hurricanes through June, July.

Unbelievable run from the 2004-2005 seasons. Again, correct anything if I'm incorrect.

2004-2005

24 hurricanes, 13 Major Hurricanes, 4 Hurricanes by the end of July
(10 made landfall as hurricane in U.S.)

$201.5b in damages

6,997 deaths

2006-2007-2008-2009

22 Hurricanes, 11 Major Hurricanes, 2 Hurricanes by the end of July.
(3 made landfall as hurricane in U.S.)

$51.1b in damages

1,490 deaths

There's little doubt that the 2004-2005 seasons produced insane numbers. I never dreamed we could possibly get into greek letter names like we did in 2005. It will be interesting to see how strong La Nina gets this year and just how many storms we see.

I had the great fortune to take my vacation right in the middle of TS Alex on the Yucatan. It wasn't quite as bad as I would have expected, but I don't think I'm going to try to plan it that way next year, either.

Speaking of the Yucatan; there looks to be another tropical disturbance passing over. It's looking like our next tropical depression. I don't think it'll be anything more than that. Quite a bit of early activity in the Gulf of Mexico.

I was thinking we'd see a little more activity by this time in July. We do have a slow moving tropical wave in the Lesser Antilles. It's looking like it could be heading toward the GoM. Some people are giving it a chance to develop; however, the upper level low will probably bring an end to those chances.

I'm still thinking we'll see a very busy August.

You, in Massachusetts, may get more hurricane action than me and wounded here in FL.

The newest hurricane is Hurricane Earl. They have tried to get a good picture of it, but it keeps closing its "eye" when the picture is took.
