Are We Witnessing The Death of Tennessee Football?

We've had 3 coaches in 3 years. Could not attract an elite coach and we were publicly spurned by some 2nd tier coaches. We cant fill the stadium (Tennessee is selling 3 game ticket packs, how weak is that?). I cant recall the fan base ever being this divided in my 40 years of following the Vols. Recruiting seems to be struggling. Fan enthusiasm is nonexistent. Each of our rivals that possess a strong talent base are elite and show no signs of falling off (UGA/LSU still reeling them in despite underperforming). Super conferences looming on the horizon and I believe that if the SEC expands it will only further hurt Tennessee recruiting. Can it be that our best days are behind us?

Nope. It's always darkest before the dawn.

We have:

1) the facilities
2) the money
3) the commitment to football
4) a tradition (least important, btw)

Winning will follow, given good decisions and time.

Maybe, until Peyton comes back to coach.

We just had back-to-back top 10 recruiting classes. We have not fallen completely off the radar.

things are not near as bad as the late 70s and early 80s.. we went 10 years without being ranked... had far worse seasons during that span than the last 10 years.

If things conitnue on a downward spiral and don't turn, then 5 years from now you might be right.

As a man of the faith, you're surprisingly lacking in, well.... faith.

Yes. Tennessee football is on it's death knell. We are practically heralding that destruction by posting on this board. Quick! Be gone with all of you!

Seriously though, a lot of schools and sports teams in general are having problems with ticket sales due, primarily, to the advent of widely available HD programming. There are fans that, believe it or not, would rather watch their team play on their 50" HDTV while enjoying a cold beer and a hot bratwurst in their comfortable chair in their climate-controlled home instead of dropping money to drive, park, walk to the stadium, etc and sweat in the heat and freeze in the cold.

Also, it will be a problem for UT specifically as our team will be successful if they break .500. Derek Dooley isn't nearly as exciting from a fan's point-of-view and that will also have an impact. Change will come rexy rather it be through DD's success or another coach if he doesn't fit the bill, I suggest you practice a little more patience and a little less Chicken Little.

i think if Dooley fails we may ot recover for 10 years or so. We are definitely a coach class school in the SEC and irrelevant nationally.
