Polygamy - should it be legal?

Given the gay marriage discussion I'd be interested in seeing the arguments for or against a person being able to marry more than one other person at the same time.

I'll stick to my position on gay marriage. It's an issue for the people to decide.

Why should a person not be able to be married to more than one person? Why shouldn't someone in a 3 or 4 way relationship not be entitled to spousal government sanctioned benefits?

Discuss.

I could use an extra husband so I can send him out to work, and keep mine where he belongs.

very good point. because bloodsucking lawyers wouldnt be able to get so much money in a divorce because then that person wouldnt be entitled to half

I personally don't care if people want to practice polygamy, just like with gay marriage, they should have the freedom to do what they want.

The problem I have with polygamy is the inevitable welfare scams and abuse (physical, sexual, emotional) that always seem to follow in these relationships.

It is ridiculous for some guy to marry 10 wives and have 40 children if he can't support them. The state shouldn't have to pick up the tab simply because he wants to have variety in his sleeping arangements.

Damn dirty polygamists!

On the last point - the state picks up the tab for this crap all the time whether there's a marriage license involved or not (mostly not).

I don't care if polygamy is allowed or not, but I would prefer for the people to say lets do it.

If the family can support themselves financially and it is all consenting...live and let live as far as I'm concerned.

I have really thought about this one a lot. I mean, you know as well as I do that if you have ten wives as soon as one pops the rest will get their peroids also.

So really, what is the point of having multiple wives?
