The congress has much more to fear. The recession probably will not be over in two years and they are not all that popular to begin with. Congress needs to be able to run against Bush one more time.

I doubt the Republicans catch majorities in either house after the next elections, but they will make major gains. That is assuming they don't start running Christian Coalition lapdogs out there.

While his voting record in the Senate would suggest he were as liberal as Pelosi or Reid, I have never thought he was the same type of Democrat as either one of them. Pelosi and Reid are going to be disappointed very soon and often. Obama knows he has to govern more from the center than to the left. It is the only way the country can recover both domestically and economically

This kind of argument simply makes no sense to me. You're trying to convince everyone that he is different than his voting record to date and that his past pet projects just weren't him.

I don't get that.

He is certainly a liberal at heart, but I think he is going to govern from a much more practical standpoint. That is going to ruffle plenty of feathers.

Everyone hopes that is the case (whether the person leans left or right) but what evidence, from Obama, is that based on?

Until it changes his record is who he is.

the stuff he's focused upon thus far has certainly been heavily left. The recession package is simply the New Deal with less responsibility and the Gitmo stuff is a waste of time. He's quasi closing it down.

I think the fact that liberal Democrats are already pissed at him is a good indicator as to what direction he will take things. I may be wrong.

I don't disagree, but he has been forced to try to give the economy a shot in the arm. It is interesting that he has already changed his plans somewhat on taxes for businesses and such.
