| The War on Drugs has Failed So when is it PC to say it out loud? The war on drugs is a war on common sense - Just Say No ... More - Views - Jack Hunter - Charleston City Paper - Charleston
In the case of marijuana use, it is hard to imagine how the benefits, if there are any, of punishing pot smokers outweigh the cost of doing so. In my own experience, I don't think I've ever had a conversation with a police officer who actually believes the war on drugs is sensible or successful on any level. It's a waste of time for law enforcement, a waste of money for the taxpayer, and a waste of dignity, reputation, and possibly freedom by those who choose to use a drug that arguably is no worse than alcohol
Or as Nadelmann writes, "The Americans who voted in 1933 to repeal prohibition differed greatly in their reasons for overturning the system. But almost all agreed that the evils of failed suppression far outweighed the evils of alcohol consumption."
So what say you?

| the fact that marijuana carries the same penalties as heroin or meth tells you all you need to know about the silliness of the drug laws. |

| Agreed, I have not smoked in a LONG time, but seriously a drunk will hit the roads and kill someone, a stoner will hit the roads and not get over 30mph and feel as though they are speed racer, a drunk will go rob a liquor store, a stoner will not be able to order a taco bell because they are laughing so hard.

| Legalize it and guarantee you will see crime rates drop. It would destroy many of drug cartels that smuggle weed over the border. It is senseless to keep the war on mary jane ongoing

The same cartels that smuggle weed also smuggle cocaine and meth. it would put a small dent in it for a while but they would simply put more resources into other drugs. Weed is a higher risk for them because you have to smuggle large amounts for the same reward compared to say cocaine where the profit to risk ratio is higher because you can smuggle smaller quantities and get greater return.
Meth is their newest venture (been going on for quite some time now) it is cheap but easier to smuggle than weed which is very bulky.

As a concerned citizen, use your own money to try to educate people as to the dangers of using such drugs. However, do not coerce them through the use of government enforcement. Quote:
