John Bolton: After Russia's invasion of Georgia, what now for the West? - Telegraph

it's sort of long but a good perspective.

Is there any body out there that remembers the Cuban Missle Crisis? Can anyone name the chief reason why the Kremlin thought they could get away with putting nukes right off our border?

Exactly, we had a leader who was perceived as weak and would not deal forcefully with threats, as the Kremlin saw it. It was because of this the world was on the brink of nuclear war. I know Putin sits in Russia and in weighing our two presidential candidates knows who his choice would be. Welcome to the new cold war.

this isn't going to the last attack on a country from putin. especially if obama is going to get elected. he knows how weak democrats are when it comes to defense and he'll use that for his advantage. obama, UN and nato will pass some meaningless resolution condeming the actions but he'll not care. Putin can also use oil as a weapon, which i don't think they had during the 1st cold war. it's going to be interesting to see what happens.

It's too late for Georgia but you can expect to see Ukraine fast tracked for NATO membership now.

i don't know, i think russia has grown a new set of balls. it's got strong backers in China and Iran. it sees a chance to take back their old countries. when you have russian generals basically threatens to nuke ukraine, that's pretty ballsy

if it came down to a fight against Nato there is absolutely no way China and Iran jump on the other side unless they enjoy suicide. China is more likely to choose us and sneak in to steal Russia's natural resources

i don't think they'll actuall fight, but i believe they'll provide them with a lot of resources and money. weapons, etc. i think Iran will also support russia in the same way.

I agree with PJ here. China is fostering a growing economy. They have invested too much in the west and their own infrastructure to let it implode.

I think Iran would help Russia because so much of Iran's technology is sourced from Russia. I think it will be much more interesting to see where India finds itself in all of this. They are in a similar situation as China though.

you mean the same Iran who fought for years against the Iraq army we destroyed in a month? Plus, Israel would be on our side just waiting for the chance to strike those nuke plants they're supposed to have. Anything short of a land war with China would end quickly.

Iran has a new trick up their sleeve now (although I do believe Israel will take care of that in short order). It will not be in conventional warfare that they fight us though. They will try to make it as painful for us as possible in Iraq, I believe that is where the Iranian front of that war would be if fought.

we'll never fight because the obama admin doesn't have the balls. they'll pass resolutions and do a bunch of talking but that's about how far they'll go. the UN will pass same useless resolutions strongly condeming by using the strongest words known if the dictionary. they'll condemn it with such passion. and that's as far as it will go.
