Doctor Fired for Religious Opinions Expressed in Sermon

I'm sure they'd be just as interested in any non Christian employee doing the same thing in their house of worship. No wait that would be profiling.

If he was working for a private firm I'd be fine with his termination but since he was a state employee I have to take his side.

One thing you have to remember about Todd Starnes is there tends to be more than meets the eye with his articles. Sometimes he does find some diamonds, but many of the times he tends to omit details important to the overall situation.

Fired for preaching: Georgia dumps doctor over church sermons | Fox News

I assume that all of the "conservatives" on the board are fine with this result, but I tend to side with this doctor. Opinions that are religious in nature and expressed in a church should not present as an opportunity to terminate employment.

What if some government/military official was a radical jihadist, and preached "death to the great satan America". Still not a good enough reason to terminate employment?

I do think the religious component is important given our Freedom of Religion.

If he were a singer with vile lyrics or did porno or some other morals clause issue then maybe the termination is merited.

Is this being justified as separation of church and state or as hate speech?

My general inclination is that what you do off the job shouldn't be relevant to the job.

Seems like a DOD official wanting to attack America is in the wrong line of work?

“DPH officers and other employees spent hours reviewing these and other of Dr. Walsh’s sermons and other public addresses available online, analyzing and taking notes on his religious beliefs and viewpoints on social, cultural and other matters of public concern as expressed in the sermons and other public addresses,” the lawsuit states."

Sounds like they really had a hard on for this guy.

I wouldn't fire someone for being gay, nor would I fire someone for preaching in their church against being gay.

As long as it's not interfering with ones job I don't see a need to silence anyone from speaking about their religion. I didn't read anything saying that this doctor ever expressed his religion to anyone while at work, just in his sermons. Shouldn't matter either way, on the job or in the pulpit, as long as there's no interference with work IMO.

On a side note, I do think some christians come down way too hard on sin when talking about faith in public. Let them continue in their sin, let God convict them of it not you.

The fact that you cannot see the difference in the OP's story and your example is a perfect example of whats wrong in our society.
