A study conducted by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) found that black fathers are just as present—and sometimes more so—in the lives of their children than dads of other races, defying the stereotype that black fathers simply aren't around to give their kids guidance and support

Is it just me or are the stats somewhat meaningless?

It analyzes what percentage of fathers who live with the kid do certain activities. It also analyzes what percentage of fathers who do not live with the kid do the same activities.

What percentage, overall, of fathers live with their kids? That is the issue. For instance if you studied 100 families of each ethnicity and lets say that latinos men reside with their children 60% of the time, whites 50% of the time and blacks only 30% of the time. If we then apply the same statistics provided in the first category you get the following raw numbers

Latinos - 38 live with and ate daily meals with the kid. 4 did not live with, but ate daily

Whites - 37 and 0

Blacks - 24 and 8

When looking at same data, in a different light, it can radically change the results. It may be more important to the black fathers to participate in their children's lives but it may be an unrealized goal.

Good points, but I still think there is value in the data/findings.

When we look at the socioeconomic issues that face the black community, basically everyone thinks it's caused by some combination of the breakdown of the family + systemic factors (war on drugs, war on poverty, etc.). If black fathers are doing more than others when they don't live with their children, it begs the question why do fewer live with their children?

In other words, this helps to strengthen the case that the breakdown of the family is less causal and correlates with the systemic catalysts (war on poverty and war on drugs result in less fathers at home).

Statistics aren't my strong suit, but it seems like without a proper breakdown of which races are more likely to live with their kids or not, these numbers are somewhat meaningless.

The absent father myth often (I believe) gets confused with the out of wedlock birth statistic, which is around 75% for blacks.

OK, if this is true, what is the excuse for all the black on black crime?

Lack of jobs, not enough hugs, white people, the police, the government, climate change, high fat diet, heart disease, no local parks, low credit score, etc. Take your pick, plenty of scapegoats available.

It's just an unsolvable conundrum. Screw trying to fix it, lets just deport all the poor black people.

They have to want to do it themselves as well, and as long as there is no motivation to stop getting all the .gov handouts, the cycle will continue. iow, how's that War on Poverty thingy working out for us?

I wonder how many people on this board would be the self made men that they are had the starting line for this race we call life been moved back 50 yards for the 100 yard race.

They would probably still finish first. That is, if they didn't have to drag the heavy tax ball and chain with them like they do now.

Probably the same. You either have the drive and determination or you don't.

Pretty arrogant attitude. There are so many built in advantages when you come from a middle class or better home. Your schooling tends to be better. Your mom tends not to be a crack whore. You aren't worried about family finances. You don't have drug dealers on the corner in your neighborhood. You don't have gangs everywhere. Your family can afford activities outside of school such as music lessons or youth sports leagues.

Even kids that want to learn and get good grades in school find themselves behind the kids from either good public or private schools. The game is rigged from the get. It's time we acknowledge that. Of course there is room for responsibility, every person that doesn't succeed can blame himself, but there are other factors that contribute.

Lifetime handouts don't work. Teaching these kids a skill might. If you give a man a fish he is hungry again in an hour. If you teach him to catch a fish you do him a good turn.

so is the purpose of this report to replace one stereotype with another? No more bad black fathers only bad Latino fathers? and is white the benchmark for good vs bad? that seems racist too, for everyone involved.

You said self made. A self made man is going to succeed regardless of where they start.

Look at in reverse, how many middle class kids squander all that advantage and never make it? You either have it or you don't, where you start generally just determines when you get there and how hard you have to work.

If you give a man a big enough fish, he won't be hungry in an hour.

First, I would have a problem with the data as it doesn't appear to be based on any solid facts. Merely, we asked the Dad's how much time they spent doing these things. Call me a skeptic, but I don't think anyone wants to be viewed as a bad Father so my guess is all of the answers are skewed quite a bit.

Second, how have they accounted for the children who may not even know who their father is?
