Finland is kicking the idea around to just give its citizens 800 euros/month and doing away with government programs.

Finland considers instituting universal basic income - UPI.com

HELSINKI, Finland, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Finland is considering paying every adult citizen about $860 a month at the cost of shutting down all established social benefits.

A proposal by the Finnish Social Insurance Institute, or KELA, would create a tax-free universal basic income in an attempt to encourage people to seek employment. Unemployment in Finland is currently at record levels and many people do not seek low-wage, temporary employment because they may lose welfare benefits.

Saw this and of the 2 options I prefer this one. At least it links spending behavior to choice and consequences.

looking at the SSI mailing I get every year, settling for $800 would be a win for the gov't

Waste is Waste.. Rather see the individual pick and choose their own waste than on a mandated worthless govt program

If it is cheaper in the long run (eliminating overhead and increasing employment inventive), why not?

If anything, they are trying something different. What governments have been doing doesn't seem to work.

Clever. They want to stop beating around the bush and simplify the process. And this actually holds people accountable for their poor decisions.

This will backfire after people start spending all their government cash on surströmming and gravlax then can't pay for their doctors bills to treat their GERD and tapeworms. It will also create a huge black market for code red mountain dew and Swedish Fish.

This won't work. I bet a large portion will piss away the stipend and come back asking for the benefits on top of the cash.

"...people do not seek low-wage, temporary employment because they may lose welfare benefits."

Sounds like an experiment going on right here in the USA.

I think if you are going to do this its pretty cool. The government is assuming most people will save that money to use it towards said benefits that don't exist anymore. This might work in Finland but lets not forget that social experiences in Nordic countries and their results have little to zero bearing on how they might work elsewhere, especially in the USA.

Yah? Well they should have invented the Petrodollar then, huh?

Yes. But when your "big stick" doctrine has only been swung at small Sami populations, you don't have much of story to sell OPEC on the protective umbrella thing. "All the pukko knives you can use!"

Now they are talking about requirements for asylum seekers. Finnish government taking on some big reforms - will be interesting to see how they work.

Finland's government will require asylum seekers to work for free and to acknowledge a "national curriculum" on Finnish culture and society, it said on Tuesday, launching measures to tighten its immigration policy.

It will also regularly reassess conditions in the asylum seekers' home countries twice a year, and if necessary, cancel residence permits accordingly.

After its latest reassessment on Afghanistan, it said it would no longer grant subsidiary protection, claimed by people who say they face death or torture, to asylum seekers from South and East Afghanistan.

The government said it will speed up the return of migrants who don't qualify for asylum. It estimated around two thirds will be rejected.

Finland seems to have the right idea when it comes to immigrants.

If their Swedish neighbors even had half of the right idea they may not be accelerating toward their destruction. I have never seen a people so eager to throw away their culture. Sweden is what happens when SJWs become politicians.
