Freddie Gray, the Baltimore Man Who Died of Spinal Injury Sustained in Police Custody - The Atlantic

Authorities can't say if there was a particularly good reason why police arrested Gray. According to the city, an officer made eye contact with Gray, and he took off running, so they pursued him. Though he'd had scrapes with the law before, there's no indication he was wanted at the time. And though he was found with a switchblade, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said, “We know that having a knife is not necessarily a crime.”

The police say Gray didn't resist arrest and that officers didn't use force, which seems to be mostly corroborated by video shot by bystanders. Gray seems to shout in pain, and his leg seems injured as officers drag him to a police van. (Someone off camera shouts, "His leg broke and y'all dragging him like that!") Gray also had asthma and requested his inhaler, but didn't get it. Yet it's not the leg or the asthma that killed him. Instead, it was a grave injury to his spinal cord. Gray's family said he was treated for three fractured vertebrae and a crushed voice box, the sorts of injuries that doctors say are usually caused by serious car accidents. The van made at least two stops before reaching the police station, but there's no footage to say what happened during the journey or at those stops.

Looting is dumb, but so is murdering people in handcuffs. One is way worse than the other. Neither are desirable. And one wouldn't exist without the other. Carl, aren't you the one always pointing out that if somebody hadn't done something stupid, the police never would have murdered them. Well, if the police wouldn't murder innocent people in handcuffs, they wouldn't have to deal with looters.

Again, why was he even arrested?

I'm going to keep drilling this into the heads of these LEOs and their defenders until they realize that we are either arresting far too many people on the pettiest of crimes or that we have people loosing life and limb over the most trivial of offenses. The blood of Baltimore is right now on all of the police and their defenders hands right now...

So you're not going to hold the rioters responsible at all?

If these protesters are protesting the Police and want to get violent, they should surround the Police Dept and do what they do instead of destroying personal property.

The PD doesn't have anything worth looting. And those guys got sticks, guns and stuff.

It's time to try something different for sure. These goons want to destroy property, then they need to pay the consequences.

Why don't they just do it all the time? Why do they choose to rebel when their overlords mysteriously kill one of their own. It's like they actually care about justice or something.

You can't fight the police department. Are you crazy? They can't take the police head on. They don't want to die.

These people out there looting stores and hurting people don't give 2 ****s about justice.

They just get a free pass to commit crimes and know there's a good chance they won't get caught because so much of it is going on.

Don't kid yourself.
