I guess if France is our main ally we have to figure at some point they will run up a white flag and we'll be on our own.

They do get the ugly jobs that the regular French military don't want (see Indochina and Algeria).

The majority of the Foreign Legion in Indochina were former Wehrmacht Veterans of WW2. Basic training for the Foreign Legion is much tougher than the US Marine Corps training camps at Parris Island or San Diego.

For what it's worth, I never stopped calling them "French" fries. However, I did stop buying Heinz ketchup.

France has some of the worlds best special forces. They are known to be a yellow belly rifle dropping kind of country, but their special forces are top notch.
