More "stellar" legislation from king Barry

I think this is a good idea. Whether some think this is a good or bad move for companies I wish I had paid sick leave (at least 7 days within a year) at my company when I was in the work force. This article doesn't state if this affects "hourly" employees. Whenever I was sick & couldn't be at work I had to take a day of my "vacation pay" to make up the difference for that week which was never fair to us hard workers in the manufacturing plant.

What's the difference between sick and vacation days? Also federal employees get plenty of days off. This is just more bs

We actually get about 10.5 sick days a year. And you'll love this..it keeps accumulating until we retire!

Sick leave is good. 7 days ain't no biggy. Most will burn through theirs calling out for being drunk or hungover. Thats how the people I work with who have ZERO sick time after 30 years behave..

I plan on having like 200+ days of sick leave when I retire and come down with the "itis" right before I retire..

Vacation days should be kept separated & not used as sick days imo. I know the big manufacturing company I worked for that some "salaried employees" that had those sick days (7) never took those sick days because the company really acted like a big baby & would moan & groan if you were sick & took a couple of days when you had the flu or a 24 hr. stomach virus. They acted like they were paying you out of their own pocket.

Stupid government. Stop giving me rights!

I love it when people come into work when they have the flu because they dont' want to burn their (sparse, in comparison) vacation days and they're not allowed to be sick. They don't want to also risk losing their job because workers here are really a step above cattle.

Stupid government. I want to work most of my life until I die. I want to get cancer because of a complete lack of regulation and I want to completely overpay for my cable TV and internet! I love it when corporations raw dog me!

If this gets pushed onto the private sector just consider it another shot by the Dems in the war on women. Face it, who takes the most "sick" and personal days? Why hire them if you can help it?

Next up: Women shouldn't get maternity leave.

Just pop the kid out and get right back into work. Maternity leave is such a government socialist bailout liberal communist Obola fallacy. Did I get enough catchwords in there? I have a couple more I was told to parrot.

And you know what makes me sick? People not wanting to work 50 hours a week. They want to spend time with their kids! Bollocks, I say. 40 hour weeks are for the weak socialist government teat spineless liberal communist Europeans. What kind of unemployable idiot wants to raise their kid? Kids are worthless. They can't work, they need stuff. They're just drains on the system.

This is about now. Not building a society for the future. I can't benefit from the future. So I say lets just wreck (*&#@ and burn the future to the ground.

I hate progress and I hate it when people want something. Spineless liberal hippies. Go to Europe, scum.

For nothing, I agree. And if your only working 40 hours per week, I'll take my big mac without pickle.

When your company cuts your job to pay for it you'll have all the time you need.

Me personally? I'm an engineer and I set my own hours. I get paid by contract so if I only need 4 hours a day to do my job compared to 8 for someone else... my job doesn't care. My job isn't going to be cut anytime soon.

They know I spend time on a Friday ****ing around on VolNation. They don't care. So long as the engineering gets engineered, it doesn't matter. Quite literally, as I was typing this, my boss stopped by with a lead engineer and we talked about Cuba and Miami strip clubs.

But nice jump in logic. I'm taken care of. I've got mine. I have a great job that guarantees I can spend time with my wife and 4 month old. I get paid quite a bit... more than enough to where my wife doesn't need to work and we definitely get by. I have phenomenal (and expensive, paid mostly by my company) healthcare. I got here by busting my @ss in school and made connections when I was in the military and by being very good at my job in a very niche market. With that said, I fully recognize I'm here on part of my own work and being in the right place at the right time.

However, since I'm not a self-serving and completely selfish prick, I also realize that there are plenty of people that are being screwed. People will get sick. Their kids get sick. If they're sick, they should be able to take off work without their pay being docked and without fear of losing their job or losing their sparse vacation.

I also advocate for some baseline of healthcare be extended to people that are otherwise uninsured or have insurance that collects their money and then backs out when they're expected to fit a bill. Because I realize that I was an unlucky event away from having my current situation be unavailable because I was given a $15,000 hospital bill when I was 20 years old.

Disclaimer: I believe in giving those willing to work the benefits of education, healthcare, etc. Screw the lazies that want to sit at home and live off welfare and screw the idiots that skipped rope through college and want to whine about their Basketweaving or Medieval Literature degree being unemployable. You might as well not have a college degree if you're going to study Medieval Literate... as cool as it is.

Just my take on it.

Well, you are a little off... socialists only want to work 35 hours/weak, and they want to retire at 55... with, of course full government sponsored retirement plan and .gov healthcare....

I agree with you to an extent, but I am tired of paying for octomom and other lazy asses. Cut them off after awhile and let them starve. Sorry, but enough is enough.

I grew up on a dairy farm, there were no such things as sick days, vacation or personal time and that has stuck with me through out my life and probably one of the reasons I am where I am. Able to sit here and argue with you.

If a company wants to expand benefits, offer paid leave or what have you, fine. Government should not mandate it! Fact is women take far more sick and personal time than men, and if it were law that everyone gets 6 weeks of paid leave why would you hire a woman for a critical position?

BTW my son is an industrial or manufacturing (whatever it's called) engineer, he designs assembly lines, tools and work stations. Interesting stuff but still would rather him come work for me, he'd make more money and have actual advancement. He says he couldn't work for me. Go figure?

The best way, IMO, is to ensure people working those laid off have said benefits. Sh1t happens. I don't mind paying taxes to provide a safety net to people that have shown a willingness to work.

I'd rather cover 90 workers and have 10 slip through the cracks than punish 90 people who have put their time in just to spite the 10 people exploiting the system.

Again: If you're unemployed, (*&@ off. I adamantly believe in the Grasshopper/Ant fable. Work hard and reap the rewards. I do, however, believe in another step with saying that if the ants were working hard but there simply wasn't enough to provide for all of them.. we don't have to go full-tilt Darwinian.

I definitely believe that education, healthcare, vacation/sick, etc benefits should be there for people willing to put the time and work in. That's what this country should stand for.

I agree Federal Benefits are very good. This is just the only thing the President can affect without new legislation, sort of like setting the federal minimum wage.

In theory, vacation days are just that, days you don't go to work but still get paid. For our company vacation days have to be taken all at once. Sick days are for the occasional day when you are too sick to go to work. Without sick pay, many workers choose to go to work, even when they shouldn't. So you get an ineffective worker and risk spreading illness to other workers if you don't have this benefit.

I'm sympathetic to the small businesses who probably can't afford to offer this benefit. But, there isn't really a good reason for larger companies to not provide it. For example, I work for the 4th largest employer in the world(G4S). We get 1 week of paid vacation (40 hours) per year. No other benefits. If one of my workers gets sick, he or she simply loses a day's pay(or comes to work sick). All appointments have to be taken on their days off, or they have to switch work days with a co-worker. Now we pay pretty well so they might grumble about losing the pay, but they tend to stick around, so turn over is low. At other work sites where they pay less, you tend to have a lot of turn over as guys will jump at other jobs with the same pay but sick day benefits.

Also, for long term medical stuff (babies, surgery etc). The worker goes on FMLA so they will have a job when they get back. But, they are then forced to use their vacation time to get any pay, then their short term disability will kick in. All in all, it will pay for about 5 weeks of time off. Of course, once they return to work they have no vacation for another year, not sure if they would get STI again or not.

To me it only makes sense for employers to offer this. It keeps your workers happy, keeps your work site disease free and reduces turn over. Not sure I want it mandated, but it doesn't seem like employers want to do this on their own.

Most people don't work on a dairy farm and illnesses spread through an office (where most Americans work):

20080409_cubiclesfromofficespace.jpg

like a whirling dervish.

And if you're a fast-food employee (that someone else mocked on here) and you have no sick days and you can't afford to take an unpaid day off... guess who's going to be coughing on other people's food?

If you're a minimum wage stocker at a grocery store and you can't afford an unpaid sick day... guess who is handling your food, canned items, etc?

If you're a standard worker at a restaurant and you can't afford to take a sick day (this one is more complicated due to tips, but still) guess who is handling your prepared food? Make sure you use the bread they handled to get up every bit off your plate. Waste not, want not.

See where I'm going? I've worked at all 3 places in my life and I've seen sick people come into work. And they've undoubtedly gotten others sick. But, hey, you grew up on a farm, you know all there is to know about the world that 98% of Americans live in.
