United States, Cuba to normalize relations

The only real impediment to it all these years has been the politics of South Florida. Growing up there in the 70's and 80's, the opposition to it was fierce. Militant. The ex-pats who lost their businesses and fortunes were livid at just the thought of it. they wanted their stuff back. But as they have gotten older and died off, and two generations later, the intensity in the opposition is just not there.

I'm wondering how this will affect the Cuban Immigration situation.

I'm not opposed, just there is a lot of stuff other than opening an embassy that will have to be addressed.

Normalized relations with Cuba would be a great move for Obama and the US.

Not to mention opening up another cheap vacation spot.

For real, there is money to be made there.

My neighbor growing up used to live in Miami and talked about going down to Havana on the weekends. She said it was the spot back before Castro took power.

I can't wait to vacation in Cuba and drink my ass off. I've heard that the country is gorgeous and extremely cheap!

I know some Cuban immigrants and they say the beaches are gorgeous. We've pissed away almost 60 years of opportunity with our policies.

Just saw where they released Alan Gross and in return we've released 3 of the Cuban Five.

The rest of the island is supposed to be beautiful.

Gitmo is the bung hole of Cuba though.

One thing I don't miss are the Banana Rats. Imagine a rat the size of a possum. Well, kind of a cross between a beaver and a rat.

I'm all for normalizing - clearly the sanctions haven't had the intended effect.

As for the swap - looks like the Bergdahl one to me.

I'll definitely visit when allowed. I have a friend in Miami who's boat can range Havana in a day.

The Cuban policy failed to achieve it's goal of toppling the regime, I applaud the President for stepping up and doing away with a failed idea.

I speak spanish and everyone tells this joke that there is still a protester in Cuba shouting "Free Elian Gonzalez". Somebody approaches the protester and says, "We got Elian back years ago. What are you doing?" and the protester responds, "Yo se. Yo soy Elian Gonzalez!"

Just watched Obama's speech. Interesting that he is calling on Congress to lift the embargo but he went ahead and did all he can by EO.

To my knowledge, he never went to Congress to even ask for action on this instead choosing to go it alone then tell Congress to get on board.

This is a major policy shift with virtually no consultation with Congress.
