In cities across Brazil, people are taking to the streets in large numbers to protest against their government. Said Maria Claudia Cardoso in Sao Paulo, "We're massacred by the government's taxes - yet when we leave home in the morning to go to work, we don't know if we'll make it home alive because of the violence. We don't have good schools for our kids. Our hospitals are in awful shape. Corruption is rife. These protests will make history and wake our politicians up to the fact that we're not taking it anymore!"

Leftist President Dilma Rousseff recognized people's right to protest. Most demonstrations appeared peaceful, but there were some reports of violence.

I haven't seen that. Isn't Iceland pretty much a socialist state?

Yes. And if you wanna experience what its like to not have any rights its a cool place to live. For example...code red Mt.Dew is banned..anything with the red dye in it is banned..there is no probable cause needed for anything. Cops want your blood for an alcohol test they take it by force if necessary.

You know the country has gone to pot when they ban Mt.Dew.

Oh man the World Cup next year is gonna be awesome!

Could there be a connection between the fiscal downfall of a country and their support of soccer?

I see a trend developing across the world and here in the US as it's popularity grows.

Here's another link for you to check out when you get the chance...

Cost Of Living Comparison Between United States And Iceland

While I loved the year I spent in Iceland, that place is expensive to live in due to the fact nearly everything has to be imported. So while some might think this is a perfect Utopian place for business to thrive due to economic freedoms, the cost of living is drastically higher than most places in the US which in turn hurts growth.

Wait until the US dollar is not used as the worlds currency reserve any longer.

I'm assuming this is supposed to be some sort of joke. Since there's no way you're saying that soccer is causing economic downfall throughout the world. Right?

What's not to love in a socialist country where your education and your medical is paid for...

But suddenly the banking system collapses because of short term debt and in turn the entire economy collapses because you cannot afford a welfare state and have to be bailed out. To include a hiked interest rate of 18% for close to three years, inflation running at 14% until early 2011, a current VAT of 25% (2nd highest) and personal income tax rates ranked at #7 in the list of European nations. Sometimes being in the top ten is a good thing, but in this case, not so much.

So what's not to love about Iceland? Clean air and water, free education and medical, plenty of energy from geothermal sources, flat corporate taxes, nice looking women...got bailed out by the rest of Europe after their country almost went bankrupt. But they are happy in the same way a lot of Europeans in some regards, they just don't know any better.
