Iran set to acquire S-300PTs from Belarus

We all know that Israel's Prime Minister is campaigning for a military attack on Iran's nuclear facilities. He might mince words occasionally, but that's basically what he's doing. Our own officials repeatedly state that all options are on the table. Iran claims to possess four S-300 air defense systems, two acquired from Belarus and two from some other source. That would be almost 200 missiles. Russia had contracted to sell Iran S-300 systems, but reportedly backed out of the deal after the U.N. placed an embargo on Iran.

So what does this mean? Without the S-300 systems, Iran's air defense is highly vulnerable to attacks. With the S-300 in place around their nuclear facilities, conventional(non-stealth) air platforms attacking the facilities would probably suffer casualties until the missiles ran out.

Does Iran actually have the S-300s? Belarus denies selling them to Iran, but of course Belarus would deny that even if it were true. Iran also asserts that it has reverse engineered an early version of the S-300 system from elements acquired after the fall of the Soviet Union, but experts doubt the claim. Our government surely knows what systems Iran has in place, but that information is classified.

It does not matter. If they do, Israel knows about them and where they are located. They will have the technology and military strategy to makes sure that said air defense measures are not a problem.

spend a few minutes studying Israels military campaigns of the last century. They play for keeps. Not really concerned about collateral damage or bleeding hearts back home. Iran will be a smoking hole in the desert.

Tell me the last time they actually won something.

Mersad Air Defense System with missile Shahin Iran Iranian army defence industry military technology - YouTube

This "new indigenous system" Iran claims is in reality our American HAWK missile, radar, etc. Air Defense History: The MIM-23 HAWK missile « Chockblock's blog

It could be American made or reverse engineered by the Iranians during the thirty years of our arms embargo. First deployed in 1960, HAWK is no longer in service with our armed forces. It's plain Jane, but the U.S. Army relied on it for over forty years. The missile rides a high intensity microwave beam to the target, where a proximity fuse detonates the warhead. Maximum range is about forty miles. Iran purchased HAWK before their 1979 revolution and currently deploys twenty-two HAWK batteries in their air defense network.

The Iranians claim that "Mersad" is fully indigenous, i.e. made in Iran, with capabilities possessed by no other system in the region. However, the IRI tells more lies than Neocon Liar Command. You can't believe anything the Iranian government says, even the Ayatollah, and he's a man of the cloth so to speak. Iran probably does reproduce spare parts to maintain the HAWK, while also scrounging international sources for spares. Have they reproduced the entire system? I wouldn't be surprised if the Iranians actually back-engineered a variant of HAWK. Suffice it to say that merely putting a system in the field does not make it reliable. Unlike Patriot, HAWK does not come in a can. The entire system requires constant monitoring and maintenance.
