They went against every single strategy that you have to use to win in the NFL. And now they're probably going to lose because they can't stop short routes.

They're too gassed to now anyways. They've been out there about 2/3 of the game now.

Barring a massive mistake, Brady gets to be GOAT.

It's unconscionable that well within FG range and up by 8 they didn't try a draw or something and steal a first down. The worst thing that happens is you burn 40 more seconds and kick a fg that probably puts it away.

The call to pass on 3rd and 1 with a 16 point lead and the call to pass on 2nd and long in FG range with an 8 point lead...change either of those and Falcons are champs.

Its unfathomable. Almost like it was scripted. They were able to run the ball all game.

The crazy thing is the smallest tweak can change the outcome of the game. Coleman got hurt and they had to throw Freeman into a situation where he doesn't have a lot of reps (3rd down blocking back)....

*** ****** ***, why didn't they just run?!!

OC's like Shanahan and Kiffin are creative and are great most of the time, but sometimes they just get too cute.

That wasn't even being too cute. That was just flat out being too aggressive...to the point of being foolish.

Shanahan was cocky because of the score, but truth be told the Patriots D outplayed the Falcons O for most of the game. When you really think about it, Falcons only were in striking distance 5 times...once because of a turnover and once because of the onside kick. The Falcons did a great job of getting 6 on three trips, but outside of that, the Patriots' D owned them.

Shanahan had no reason to be cocky. Everybody in the world knows you run on those two plays.

Honestly, they still could have ended up stuffed on the 3rd and 1 (though it would have helped to have given New England a longer field). The unfathomable part's more the two downs of passing on 2nd and 11 and 3rd down at the NE 23 when up by 8 with 3:56 left in the game.

From one of the ESPN writers:

I'm as aggressive as anybody when it comes to suggesting that coaches try to get their kickers in better field goal range in lieu of settling for 50-plus-yard field goal tries, but if there was ever a situation that called for conservatism given the game situation, it was this one. Shanahan admitted after the game that he couldn't remember the playcalling decisions he made at this point of the game, conflating the ensuing plays with the sack, which is fair. It seems the entire Falcons team blacked out right around this point of the game.

What happened at that moment essentially may be Atlanta fans' "Bill Buckner" moment, as far as down the road goes.

In a vacuum, they are pretty equally bad calls in my opinion, but the fact that the 2nd one came right after what should have essentially been a life lesson...FFS
