Titan's Finnegan leaves camp

Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan has left the team's camp in an apparent contract dispute, according to a a league source.\

According to the source, Finnegan left the hotel where players and coaches are staying for training camp Friday night.

Finnegan is in entering the final year of his contract and openly said on WNSR-AM last week with TitanInsider's Darren McFarland and ex-Titan Brad Hopkins that he believed this would be his final season with the team.

“I'm super excited for the direction we're going,” Finnegan said in that interview. “It being my last year, you wish you had a few more years in that Titans uniform, but I can only speak of one now that I'm really excited about.”

The move is somewhat surprising in that it was Finnegan who organized team workouts during the lockout, getting as many as 40 teammates to attend a mini-camp at Father Ryan in June, a gesture appreciated by Coach Mike Munchak.

“I had a talk with him (Finnegan) too. We sat and talked just about his value to the team,” Munchak said of Finnegan. “I thanked him for the great work he did in the off-season with the players, stepping up and being a leader, encouraging guys to come back in town back in June to work out, I think that was a huge plus for the team and for him to show that that’s the kind of player he wants to be; not only a great player, but a leader, so we had that kind of talk.”

By all indications, Finnegan is happy with the regime change, especially the hiring of Jerry Gray as defensive coordinator.

“I'm learning a ton. I know we just put in the defense and there are some growing pains, but just the little things he has been able to say along the way have been great,” he said on Friday.

Finnegan is in the final year of a contract that will pay him $16.8 million over four years.

Gotta say I'm tired of Finny, he wasn't elite to start with now he is holding out? Pathetic, start Verner/McCourty and trade his a$$.

If he knows this is his last year here then why the hell is he holding out? He doesn't deserve an extension at all.

Wonder what we could get for him on the trade block? I'm sure Detroit would be interested.

Not sure if serious.

On the topic of Finnegan, I think we need him, but if he's going to hold out, the team should send him the five-day letter and not pay him for the whole season if he doesn't show up. I mean, besides the All-Pro year in 2008, he's been pretty average and definitely not elite. I think Verner and McCourty are better CBs than Finny. For me, this is a real head-scratcher.

Good luck, Cortland. CJ deserves a truckload of money, but you don't. I think his current contract is pretty fair given his production.

If we could get decent value for him now I wouldn't be opposed to shipping him off now. Other than in 2008 he has really wowed me as a CB, he is decent but not like some Titan fans make him out to be.

He just put out 5 tweets. He said he's not holding out and that the media reports are wrong. He had to attend to a personal matter and he has talked to the coaches. Said he's going to be playing. Not sure why it took so long to say something.

Because he realized he was about to take a PR hit and his leadership and character were going to be called into question by the media, coaches and teammates. He probably apologized after things settled down, so they'll try and keep it in house.
