Third Quarterback Rule

Anybody else caught by surprise by this in the Bears/Packers game? I've never seen or heard of it being applied in game before yesterday.

I've heard the rule before, don't think I had seen it used though.

Same, I wasn't really sure as to how it was actually applied though.

It's the reason a lot of teams never bring up a 3rd string QB from the practice squad.

It's a stupid rule

Wonder how much fun it would have been if this rule didn't exist and Hester was made QB and he just ran a wildcat for the rest of the game.

It's an odd rule, but I think people are thinking about it backwards.

NFL teams are allowed a 45 man active roster. Only players on the active roster are allowed to play in the game. The only exception to this is the 3rd quarterback. He does not count against the 45 man limit, but if you use him, you are not allowed to bring either of the two guys in front of him back into the game. An exception allows the guy to come in during the 4th quarter without restriction, ostensibly to get mop-up duty in blowouts, although that isn't clearly defined.

NFL rosters allow enough guys for 2 deep at every position, and they have added an emergency spot at QB in the rare case that the first two go down. It is the highest profile and arguably most important spot on the field, and it isn't really possible to cover with a guy from another spot.

First I heard of it was when the Titans ran into this issue earlier in the year. Can't remember which game but Young went down at some point and late in the 3rd Collins went down. They ran a couple of plays from the wildcat formation with one of the recievers to run out the clock. At the start of the 4th they brought out Rusty Smith.

Only reason I was aware of it was due to watching preseason games.

I think it's a stupid rule but I wasn't aware the 3rd team QB didn't count against the roster limit.

I'd heard of it back in 08 with the Young stuff that year...came up that if the 3rd QB were to come into play, the first had to be benched/ wasn't eligible to play the rest of the game

I didn't know though that the 2nd string had to sit out too if it was before the 3rd quarter though
