| HD TV help (fried) Not sure if this is the right place, since there is no technology forum. Here it goes anyways.
I'm pretty sure my HD TV is fried. And by fried, I mean lightning ran in on it. I came home yesterday after the big storm, and no power at all to it (everything else is fine). No, I didn't have it plugged in to a surge protector (almost everything else is). Yes, I realize that was dumb of me, but I thought "what are the chances", etc etc.
Two questions:
1. If it did get zapped, am I just SOL? Not fixable?
2. If it is fixable, can anybody recommend a good repair place around Knoxville? Or is it not even worth the cost, and I should just go ahead and buy a new TV?
Alright, technically that's 3 questions.

| if they're still around, Astro Audio and Video on Northshore is pretty good. They did warranty service on one of my sets a couple of years ago.

| | smh | That could damage any number of things, could be anywhere from a modestly priced repair to dead as can be.
Have it checked out, and get a dahmed surge protector! |

| Hate to be that guy, but have you plugged it in to a different outlet to confirm it's the TV that got fried and not the outlet it was plugged in to? |

Did the circuit breakers get tripped?
Either way this is a prime example of why surge protectors are important. |

Either way this is a prime example of why surge protectors are important. | I'm not an electrician, but outlets can definitely be damaged by lightning... based on personal experience. In my case it was one, but could certainly be multiple. |

| Circuit breaker was the first thing I thought of, well right after the TV's manual power button in the back that is. I kinda knew that it wasn't the breaker, cause the TV is plugged in to the same outlet with the surge protector. Everything on the surge protector still worked. To be sure, I checked the breaker, and it was fine.
And I tried plugging it into another outlet, and no dice either.
I figured it was too coincidental that there was a big storm that happened to knock out the power, cable, and my TV had no power anymore.
Thanks for the help tho guys. Its much appreciated.

Have it checked out, and get a dahmed surge protector! | A surge protector will not protect against a lightning strike.
If your TV was destroyed by a lightning strike it very well may be covered by your property insurance depending on your policy. Might be worth looking into. Odds are, though, if you suffered a lightening strike close and direct enough to destroy your TV then it is likely not the only casualty, unfortunately.
