I don't know a whole lot about the knoxville job sector. I take it you are not looking for a government job?

West Knoxville is nice, from Bearden all the way down through Farragut to the county line. Lots of nice neighborhoods both new and established out that way on both sides of the interstate. There is plenty of shopping and most everything is pretty convenient to get to. There are also a good many parks and a nice greenway system that goes basically from the deep west county line to downtown and flows through those communities. Hardin Valley is popular right now, it is growing but still has a little bit of the country feel left to it (for now). I dont have any experiance with it, but i have heard the Powell area is nice as well. All depends on how much you want to drop on a house and what ammenities you are looking for. There are also a lot of nice lake front houses if you have the change.

Most retired military that I know who move to the Knoxville area are empty-nesters. So I don't know what their opinions are.

Knoxville is a great area to live, period. Not sure about schools though....
