They happened to be probably the best pick and roll combo in that timespan. I've always thought of Amare as a one trick pony, and his one trick wasn't that great.

I agree with that, except I thought his one trick was fantastic. Nash and Amare made each other better (Nash easily being the better of the two). It was a match made in heaven.

Scored more and allowed less points

You said it, that was all-Nash. Throw on top of that the facts that Amare doesn't play D and doesn't rebound (I'm pretty sure he has never cracked league top 10 in any rebounding category his whole career), and I have no use for him, especially at THAT salary.

The Knicks would have been better off spending peanuts one someone else if all they were going to do was pick and roll, and spent money on another person who will actually be a presence on D and grab boards.

9.6 rpg in 2006. That'll get you top 10 most years. I still believe Suns would've won the title had Amare not been suspended against the Spurs.

Knicks made a horrible move giving him a max contract. Though, most max contracts are bad moves, IMO.

My bad, that was the one year in his career where he's cracked the top ten in rebounds. Even with that, and discounting the year where he was out with an injury for all but a few games, he typically finishes around 18th in rebounding. Not great for a guy who's that tall and 5-time all NBA.

Yeah, I agree. You need rebounding out of that position.

IIRC, D'Antoni had this scheme for Marion to hang back and get defensive rebounds while Amare and Nash started the break. This probably inflated Amare's FG%, and scoring numbers, and deflated his rebounding numbers. Marion was the best player on that team for a couple years, IMO. Hard to believe he could get you 11.8 rpg.

Here is Marion's stat line from 2005-06. It's insane. I didn't even understand advanced stats at the time, and he had my vote for MVP. I'm even more certain of it now.

Marion = 21.8 ppg, 11.8 rpg, 2.0 spg, 1.7 bpg, 1.7 topg and .591 TS%
Nash = 18.8 ppg, 10.8 apg, 3.5 topg, and .632 TS%

Marion should've been MVP, and it shouldn't have been close.

If the knicks can pick up a good true point guard in the off season, amare will flourish IMO

Flash in the pan, but if he can develop he will do. They had some decent chemistry together at times.

How do you know he's a flash in the pan? He performed well for 25 starts, and then got injured. We've got nothing else to go off.

Weren't the Knicks winning before Amare came back? Hopefully the Knicks can steal one in New York without Amare. Not sure I like their chances though.
